Chapter 9 - The New Foundation(Approx. 1,800 words)

The evening of my team celebration arrived two weeks later.

My home was filled with light, laughter, ambient jazz music, and the incredible scent of roasted rosemary chicken and garlic butter risotto prepared by a local private chef.

Twenty of my closest colleagues, business partners, and lifelong friends gathered in the spacious open-concept living room—the very room where Margaret had once tried to force me to kneel.

Where a basin of dirty water had once sat, a massive crystal centerpiece filled with white lilies and eucalyptus now rested on the polished marble coffee table.

My senior lead developer, Marcus, raised his wine glass toward me from the head of the dining table.

"To Claire!" Marcus announced loudly, gathering everyone's attention. "The brilliant founder who built this company from a garage idea into a state tech leader, and the woman who taught all of us never to settle for less than we deserve!"

"To Claire!" the room echoed in a warm, cheerful toast.

I smiled, raising my glass, feeling a deep, profound wave of happiness wash over me.

As I mingled with my guests, my phone chimed softly on the kitchen counter with a private message notification from an unknown legal portal.

I stepped away into the quiet hallway and opened the message.

It was an automated notification from the state victim advocate portal:

NOTICE OF OFFENDER INCARCERATION STATUS:Offender Margaret Bennett (Inmate #884920) has been formally processed into the Virginia Correctional Institution for Women to begin serving her 18-month sentence.

Below the notice was a routine administrative photo taken during her intake.

Margaret was dressed in a dark blue prison uniform, her hair short, her face completely stripped of all aristocratic pretensions. She looked like what she had always been beneath her arrogance: a sad, bitter, manipulative woman who had lost everything because she couldn't control the people around her.

I looked at the image for three seconds, closed the portal app, and permanently deleted the notification folder.

I walked back into my bright, warm living room, where my friends were laughing, enjoying dessert, and playing music.

I joined them at the table, taking my seat at the head of my own board—a seat that no one would ever question, demand, or take from me again.
