Chapter 7 - The Petition

Mom hadn't waited for our cease-and-desist. She had found a bottom-tier attorney willing to file an emergency petition for temporary guardianship, citing "failure to thrive" and maternal postpartum instability.
Sitting on the couch, reading through the twenty-page filing, I felt an eerie detachment wash over me. The lies were breathtaking in their audacity. Evelyn had attached sworn affidavits from herself and Brenda, claiming that on Christmas Day, Lily appeared "listless, grey-skinned, and emaciated," and that I had exhibited "erratic, violent behavior" by snatching the child and fleeing into a blizzard without adequate winter clothing.
"She swore an oath on this," I whispered, holding the notarized pages. "She committed perjury to steal my child."
"She's desperate," Evan said, reading over my shoulder. "Look at the court date. It’s an emergency ex-parte motion set for Friday morning. She’s trying to catch us off-guard before the New Year."
"She doesn't want Lily," I said, the bitter truth finally crystallizing in my mind. "She doesn't care about feeding schedules or physical therapy. She wants to break me. She wants me on my knees in front of a judge, begging her for permission to be a mother."
I picked up my phone and called Sarah Vance. When Sarah heard about the ex-parte filing, her tone shifted from clinical professional to predatory advocate.
"They used Marcus Higgins as their attorney," Sarah scoffed. "He’s a notorious ambulance chaser who takes frivolous family filings for the retainer fee. Don't panic, Claire. This is actually a massive tactical error on their part. By making wild, unsubstantiated allegations under penalty of perjury, Evelyn has handed us the rope to hang her with. I’m calling Dr. Alvarez right now. We will have him appear via video conference on Friday."

That night, I didn't cry. I sat in the rocking chair in the nursery, watching Lily sleep. Her chest rose and fell in perfect, peaceful rhythm. I touched her soft cheek, feeling the warm, miraculous life that had fought through weeks of intensive care just to be here.
"I will burn the whole world down before I let them touch you," I whispered.
