Chapter 7 - The Paper Guillotine

Special Agent Harris stepped forward, flashing a gold badge encased in black leather.
"Patricia Sterling. Vanessa Laurent. Samuel Sterling," Agent Harris said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Please remain seated and keep your hands on the table where we can see them."
Patricia let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh. "Is this a joke?! Robert, call security! These people are trespassing! My husband was a state senator! You cannot speak to me this way!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Miller commanded, taking a step toward her. The sheer steel in his voice forced Patricia back into her chair, her face draining of color until she looked like parchment.
Marcus opened his briefcase and laid four thick binders on the table with a heavy, echoing thud.
"For the past seventy-two hours," Marcus said, opening the first binder, "forensic accountants retained by the Vance Estate have been reviewing the digital trail of the Sterling Global accounts. We uncovered something fascinating."
Marcus slid an 8x10 glossy photograph across the table. It was a security camera capture from *First National Trust*, dated three weeks ago. It showed Patricia Sterling sitting at this exact table beside a young woman wearing a blonde wig, signing documents under a notary seal.
"Three weeks ago, Patricia Sterling hired an actress to impersonate my client, Clara Vance, to secure a fraudulent $500,000 equity line of credit against the Vance ancestral estate in Vermont," Marcus stated. "That loan was processed by a junior loan officer whose personal mortgage debt was mysteriously paid off two days later by an LLC registered to one Vanessa Laurent."
Vanessa turned an unnatural shade of gray. "That's... that’s completely unsubstantiated slander! I run an international consulting firm!"
"Your 'international consulting firm,' Ms. Laurent, is a registered maildrop in the Cayman Islands that is currently eighty-two million dollars in debt to an Italian creditor consortium," Marcus continued without missing a beat. "You returned to this country six months ago because your European assets were seized under an international bankruptcy writ. You didn't come back to revive your high-society roots. You came back because you were broke, desperate, and looking for a mark."
Sam stared at Vanessa, his mouth hanging open, his breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "Vanessa... what... what is he talking about? You told me you had twenty million in sovereign wealth backing!"
"Shut up, Sam!" Vanessa hissed, her polished facade cracking, revealing the snarling desperation underneath.
"And you, Sam," Marcus said, turning his lethal gaze toward my husband. "Forty-eight hours ago, you authorized a $150,000 wire transfer from your corporate payroll account to Ms. Laurent’s offshore entity. You told Clara you were trying to save your firm. But the audit shows that $100,000 of that money was earmarked for a non-refundable deposit on a penthouse suite at the *Regatta Towers* under the names Samuel Sterling and Vanessa Laurent."
The air left the room.
Sam looked at me, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated panic. "Clara... listen to me... it was an investment property! We were going to flip it! I did it for us!"
"You did it for us?" I repeated, looking at him with pity so deep it felt colder than hatred. "You were going to move into that penthouse with the woman who humiliated me in public, while you left me holding the bag for two million dollars in fraudulent debt."
"I have the phone calls, Samuel," Marcus added, pulling a flash drive from his pocket and dropping it on the table. "Every text message. Every offshore wire instruction. And thanks to Mrs. Patricia Sterling’s careless conversations over speakerphone, we have a complete, admissible audio confession detailing the entire conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bank fraud, and identity theft."
Patricia began to shake violently. "It was all Vanessa’s idea!" she shrieked, pointing a trembling, manicured finger across the table. "She came to me! She said Sam was miserable with that plain little mouse! She said we could take the money and be rid of Clara forever! She manipulated me! I’m an old woman! I’m the victim here!"
"You rancid old hag!" Vanessa screamed, lunging across the mahogany table, knocking over water glasses, her manicured claws reaching for Patricia’s throat. "You’re the one who forged the notary papers! You’re the one who told me Sam was a pushover who would do whatever you ordered him to do!"

"Ladies, that is enough!" Agent Harris barked, moving in to physically separate the two women.
