Chapter 8 - The Extraordinary Sky

Hazel stood center stage under the warm glare of the spotlight.

In her soft yellow dress and white patent-leather shoes, she looked so small against the vast backdrop of the school auditorium. Behind her, a classmate sat with an acoustic guitar, plucking a gentle, melodic rhythm that filled the quiet room.

I felt Brandon’s fingers tighten around mine. His hand was trembling slightly—not from anger this time, but from the raw, overwhelming pride of a father watching his child step into the light.

Hazel adjusted the microphone. For a split second, her eyes darted across the crowd, scanning the rows until she locked onto us. She saw Brandon. She saw Jackson. She saw Robert holding that ridiculous, enormous bouquet of pink carnations.

And then, she smiled.

The nervousness vanished from her small shoulders. She held her paper in both hands, but she didn't look down at it. She looked straight at her brother.

*"Sometimes the words are hard to find,*

*When people choose to be unkind.*

*They say that blood is all that binds,*

*The heart, the soul, the human mind.*

*But love is not a drop of red,*

*It’s in the gentle words you said.*

*It’s in the brother standing tall,*

*Who caught me when they made me fall.*

*Extraordinary isn't grand,*

*It’s simply taking someone’s hand.*

*The stars shine bright in the quiet night,*

*And family will always make things right."*

When the final chord faded from the acoustic guitar, the silence in the auditorium lasted for one breathtaking heartbeat.

Then, Jackson jumped out of his seat.

"THAT’S MY SISTER!" he roared at the top of his lungs, clapping wildly.

The entire auditorium followed his lead. The applause rolled through the room like thunder, parents cheering, teachers smiling, and the kids in the front row stomping their feet. On stage, Hazel’s face lit up with a joy so pure and radiant it could have powered a city. She curtsied, her cheeks flushed pink, waving both hands at our row.

Robert was openly weeping, wiping his eyes with a handkerchief, cheering so loudly his voice cracked. Brandon pulled me into a fierce, breathless hug, his chest heaving against mine.

"She did it," Brandon choked out against my neck. "God, Caroline, look at our girl."

When the show ended, the lobby was a chaotic sea of proud parents and over-sugared children. Hazel came barreling through the crowd like a cannonball, throwing herself straight into Brandon’s waiting arms. Brandon lifted her high into the air, spinning her around until she was giggling uncontrollably.

"You were incredible, Haze!" Jackson said, rushing over to high-five her. "You memorized the whole thing! You didn't even look at the paper!"

"I told you I could do the last bit," Hazel beamed, adjusting her hair.

"Here you go, sweetheart," Robert said softly, stepping forward and kneeling down to Hazel’s eye level. He handed her the massive bouquet of carnations. "To the brightest star in the whole damn sky. I’m so proud to be your grandpa, Hazel."

Hazel’s eyes widened at the flowers. She threw her little arms around Robert’s neck, hugging him tightly. "Thank you, Grandpa Robert!"

Robert closed his eyes, holding the little girl tight. The burden of guilt he had carried for the past month seemed to loosen its grip on him in that embrace. Blood didn't make this bond. Love did.

As we walked out into the cool evening air toward Brandon’s truck, my phone buzzed with an email notification.

I unlocked the screen and glanced at it. It was from our family attorney, Sarah Jenkins.

*Brandon & Caroline,*

*The final draft of the stepparent adoption petition for Hazel has been approved by the county court clerk. The hearing date is set for next Tuesday at 10:00 AM. Judge Martinez has reviewed the character statements from Jackson and Robert, and there are no objections on file. Congratulations.*

I stopped in my tracks on the sidewalk.

Brandon turned around, noticing I had fallen behind. "Caroline? Everything alright?"

I looked up at him, my vision blurring with tears. I handed him the phone.

Brandon read the email. He froze, his gaze fixed on the glowing text. A slow, breathtaking smile spread across his face, washing away the last remnants of the darkness that had haunted him for weeks.

"Tuesday," Brandon whispered.

"Tuesday," I echoed.

Brandon scooped Hazel up onto his shoulders and slung an arm around Jackson’s neck, pulling his son close.

"Hey, kids," Brandon said, his voice full of warmth and promise. "Who wants ice cream? The biggest sundaes in the city. My treat."

"Me!" Hazel shouted from his shoulders.

"Only if I get extra hot fudge," Jackson grinned.

"You got it, buddy," Brandon laughed, leading his family toward the car.

We were leaving the poison behind. We were stepping into a future that belonged entirely to us.
