Chapter 6 - The Secret in the BasementOn Friday afternoon, while preparing for the upcoming criminal deposition, I received a phone call from an unknown landline. I almost ignored it, but something prompted me to answer.

"Clara? Is this Clara?" a weak, trembling voice asked over the line.
"Who is this?"
"It’s David... Ethan’s father."
My breath caught in my throat. David Hayes had divorced Gloria twelve years ago and completely disappeared from family events. Ethan had always told me his father was an unstable alcoholic who abandoned the family out of selfishness.
"David?" I asked, astonished. "How did you get my number?"
"Marissa gave it to me," David said, his voice raspy. "I saw the video on the news, Clara. I saw what Gloria did to little Lily... and I saw what Ethan said. I haven't been able to sleep for three days."
"Why are you calling me, David?"
"Because Ethan lied to you about why I left," David choked out, audibly fighting back tears. "I didn't abandon my family because I was an alcoholic, Clara. I left because Gloria was abusing Ethan and me for years behind closed doors. When I tried to get custody of Ethan during our divorce, Gloria threatened to destroy my business and used her wealthy family connections to make sure I lost everything. She turned Ethan against me, brainwashed him into believing I was the villain."
I sat down heavily on Nora’s couch, my mind spinning as pieces of a tragic puzzle began falling into place.
"David... are you saying Ethan was abused too?"
"Gloria has been a master manipulator her entire life," David explained softly. "She hits when she's angry, and then she forces everyone around her to act like nothing happened. Ethan learned to survive by pleasing her, by enabling her cruelty. He thinks that protecting her is the only way to be safe. But I have old medical records, Clara. I have court documents from twelve years ago that prove Gloria’s pattern of violent behavior."
"Will you testify?" I asked immediately. "The state prosecutor is bringing criminal child abuse charges against Gloria next week. Her lawyer is trying to claim it was an isolated incident of stress."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. I could hear the older man breathing heavily, confronting years of buried fear and trauma.
"I abandoned my son because I was too weak to fight her back then," David said firmly. "I won't abandon my granddaughter now. I will fly to Chicago tomorrow and give the prosecutor everything I have."
An hour later, I met with Victoria and handed her the notes from my conversation with David.
"This changes everything for the criminal trial," Victoria said, her eyes gleaming with tactical satisfaction. "If David provides historical evidence of Gloria's systemic physical abuse, her defense attorney won't be able to argue that this was a one-time accident. It establishes a lifelong pattern of abusive behavior."
"What about Ethan?" I asked quietly.

Victoria looked at me with deep compassion. "Ethan is a victim of his mother's past, Clara. But he became an perpetrator the moment he allowed that abuse to touch your daughter and tried to cover it up. Understanding his trauma explains his behavior, but it does not excuse it. You are doing the right thing by protecting Lily."
I looked out the window at the setting sun, feeling a strange mix of sorrow and absolute clarity. The generational cycle of fear and abuse in the Hayes family was finally coming to an end, and I was going to make sure it stopped at my daughter's door.
