Chapter 5 - The Truth About Chloe(Approx. 1,800 words)

One week later.
I sat in a comfortable armchair in Victoria Vance’s sunlit downtown law office, holding a mug of warm chamomile tea.
My bump felt noticeably lighter and safer, supported securely by a brand-new, top-tier orthopedic maternity brace provided directly by Dr. Chen’s clinic. The red welts across my ribs had faded into light pink scars, and my blood pressure had returned to a perfect, healthy baseline.
The door to the conference room opened, and Victoria walked in, followed by an unexpected visitor.
It was Chloe.
She looked entirely different from the glamorous, laughing woman who had shown up at Christmas dinner wearing my stolen medical belt. She wore a simple dark sweater, no heavy makeup, and carried a thick manila folder under her arm.
She stopped at the edge of the table, looking at me with deep embarrassment. "Hi, Clara."
"Chloe," I acknowledged politely, setting my tea down. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"I asked Victoria if I could come," Chloe said, sliding the manila folder across the table toward me. "I think you need to see what’s inside this."
I looked at Victoria, who gave me a subtle nod of approval.
I opened the folder. Inside were dozens of printed email threads, bank transfer receipts, and text message logs dating back eight months between Julian and Chloe.
"What is this?" I asked.
"It’s proof that Julian was embezzling money from your joint business account to pay off his personal gambling debts," Chloe explained, her voice raw with guilt. "When I met Julian eight months ago at his firm's charity gala, he told me he was an independent venture capitalist. He bought me expensive dinners, leased a sports car, and promised to invest fifty thousand dollars into my boutique design studio."
She took a deep breath, sitting in the chair across from me.
"Two months ago, I found out he was lying," Chloe continued. "I found out he was using your credit card statements to secure personal loans. When I tried to break off the relationship, he threatened to ruin my business reputation. He told me that if I came to Christmas dinner and acted like his supportive girlfriend in front of his mother, he would give me the fifty thousand dollars he promised."
"And the support belt?" I asked.
"He came to my apartment three days before Christmas holding the belt in a hospital bag," Chloe wept softly. "He told me he bought it for me because I had complained about lower back pain from standing at my workshop. He swore it was brand new from an orthopedic store. I had no idea... I swear on my life, Clara, I had no idea he stole it from his own pregnant wife."
I read through the financial logs in the folder.
The paper trail was undeniable. Julian hadn't just been an unfaithful, arrogant husband—he had been running a systematic financial fraud scheme using my identity, my credit score, and my family trust assets to keep his extravagant lifestyle afloat while his mother encouraged every single step of it.
"Why are you giving me this, Chloe?" I asked, looking up from the papers.
"Because yesterday, Evelyn called me from a motel room," Chloe said, her eyes flashing with anger. "She offered me ten thousand dollars if I would testify in court that you attacked Julian on Christmas Day and that you cut the cords yourself to frame him."
I let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Of course she did."
"I recorded the phone call, Clara," Chloe said, pulling a USB drive from her purse and setting it beside the folder. "I gave the original audio file to the prosecutor this morning. I'm not letting those monsters ruin your life or your babies' lives."
I looked at the young woman sitting across from me. She had made terrible mistakes, but when confronted with the horrific truth, she had chosen honor over money.
"Thank you, Chloe," I said genuinely.
"I'm so sorry for what I participated in, Clara," Chloe whispered, standing up to leave. "I hope you and those babies have the most peaceful life possible."
As Chloe left the office, Victoria picked up the USB drive with a satisfied smile.
"This changes everything, Clara," Victoria stated, opening her laptop. "With this evidence of financial fraud, wire fraud, and subornation of perjury, the District Attorney is upgrading Julian's charges from misdemeanor domestic battery to multiple felony counts of grand larceny, fraud, and witness tampering."

"What does that mean for the divorce?" I asked.
"It means," Victoria smiled, "that Julian Vance will not receive a single penny of marital asset division, alimony, or trust compensation. And he will be spending his children's first birthday behind state prison bars."
