Chapter 24 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

I walked down the central aisle between the tables of stunned Richmond society. I didn't wear hospital scrubs, and I didn't wear the drab, oversized clothes Victoria had always forced upon me to make me look small and fragile. I wore a tailored midnight-blue coat, my spine straight, the color back in my face, and the pulse in my neck steady and strong.

Beside me walked Julian.

When Julian Vance stepped into the full glare of the chandeliers, a dead, suffocating silence fell over the room. At table four, an elderly woman—our great-aunt Margaret—stood up so quickly her chair tipped backward onto the carpet.

"Julian?" she whispered, her voice carrying through the frozen silence. "Dear God in heaven... Julian?"

Arthur Vance’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His face turned from red to an ashen, sickly gray. His hands began to shake violently, knocking a silver pitcher of ice water off the edge of the riser.

Victoria retreated two full steps, her back hitting the velvet backdrop of the stage. Her gaze darted between Julian and Dr. Sterling, who walked quietly behind us holding a certified blue leather binder.

"You're dead," Victoria choked out, her voice stripped of its poise, cracking into a harsh, hysterical rasp that echoed across the speakers. "You died in neonatal intensive care! I signed the certificate! Robert... Robert, you certified the death!"

"Under duress and your direct threat of destroying my family, Victoria," Dr. Sterling answered, his voice steady as he stepped to the foot of the riser. "A crime for which I have officially accepted federal immunity in exchange for turning over the original medical records, the uncashed hush checks drawn on your offshore accounts, and the falsified hospital ledger you signed in July of 1999."

"This is an outrage!" Camille screamed, stepping in front of her mother, her face contorted with fury. "You pathetic freaks! You ruined my engagement party last week with your fake heart attack, Eleanor, and now you bring an actor into my breakfast to ruin my wedding? Do you know who my fiancé is? Call the police!"

"The Richmond police are outside, Camille," Marcus said coldly, stepping onto the riser and placing a hand directly on Arthur's shoulder. "Assisting the Department of Justice with the execution of twenty-eight federal indictments."

Marcus turned to the three hundred horrified guests, whose eyes were darting from the trembling parents on the stage to the twin sons and the daughter who stood before them like an army of ghosts returned for payment.

"Arthur and Victoria Vance," Marcus announced, unsealing the first folder, "you are under arrest for interstate wire fraud, conspiracy to commit tax evasion through falsified medical trusts, the unlawful twenty-five-year confinement of a living minor heir, and the attempted framing of Eleanor Vance for corporate embezzlement while she was hospitalized in a critical cardiac state caused by deliberate medical neglect."

"I am Arthur Vance!" my father bellowed, though his voice lacked any real power, sounding like the frantic squeak of a cornered animal. "I built this city’s medical infrastructure! You have nothing! No court in Virginia will convict me on the word of an unstable runaway and an invalid!"

Julian stepped up to the podium, calmly pushing the microphone down to his height.

"I am not an invalid, Father," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "And as of eight-fifteen this morning, the Eastern District Bankruptcy Court placed every asset, every bank account, and every property held under the Vance Family Trust into emergency receivership under my and Eleanor's joint stewardship. Your cards are declined. Your accounts are frozen. The house on Monument Avenue is federally sealed."

Julian looked directly at Camille, whose face was pale with sudden horror as she looked at her fiancé, young Harrison, who was already backing away from the table, taking his parents with him toward the side exit.

"And Camille," Julian added softly, "the six million dollars you spent on your Mediterranean villa last Thursday? The transfer failed two hours ago. The Italian developers have already filed an international warrant for non-payment."

Camille collapsed back into her chair, clutching her head, sobbing hysterically as flashbulbs went off in blinding succession. Photographers were leaning over the tables, capturing every second of the Vance dynasty’s public, irreversible annihilation.

Two federal marshals stepped up behind Arthur, clicking steel cuffs around his wrists. Two female agents approached Victoria.

Victoria didn't cry. She stared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred as the cold steel closed over her wrists. "I gave you life, Eleanor," she hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. "You were nothing. A sick, worthless child who couldn't even survive without my foundation’s name."

I stepped right up to the edge of the stage, looking my mother directly in the eyes. For the first time in twenty-four years, her gaze didn't make my heart race. It didn't make me feel small. It made me feel nothing at all.

"You didn't give me life, Victoria," I said, my voice quiet, clear, and utterly calm. "You gave me nine days on an ICU floor while you picked out flower arrangements. But the head nurse stayed. Reed came back. Julian survived you. And today, we are taking our name back."

The marshals led Arthur and Victoria Vance off the stage in handcuffs, parading them past three hundred of their peers, through the double mahogany doors, and out into the waiting Richmond police vans.
