Chapter 5 - THE DIGITAL RETALIATION

By ten o'clock that night, Dad had packed two suitcases, his tool chest, and the master safe from the lake house. We left Susan sitting alone in the dark living room, surrounded by fifty years of family photo albums that had suddenly turned into monuments of deceit.

Dad came back with Jacob and me to our modest two-bedroom rental apartment. He insisted on sleeping on the worn pull-out sofa in the living room, leaving his work boots neatly aligned by my front door. For the first time in years, the apartment didn't feel small and lonely; it felt like a fortified bunker guarding the only things that mattered.

At 6:30 the following morning, my phone began to vibrate violently on the nightstand.

It wasn't a call. It was a torrential avalanche of notifications.

Text messages from former high school classmates, direct messages from strangers, Instagram tags, and missed calls from unknown numbers with Los Angeles area codes.

My stomach dropped. I unlocked the screen and opened Instagram.

Jessica had posted a seven-minute video at midnight.

The thumbnail showed her sitting on the floor of her apartment, mascara artfully smeared down her cheeks, holding a tissue, with the ring light reflecting clearly in her tear-filled pupils. The caption read:

*“I can no longer stay silent about the domestic emotional abuse and financial exploitation I have suffered at the hands of my narcissistic sister and estranged father. Please pray for my safety. The truth will come out.”*

My breath caught in my throat. I pressed play.

“Hey, guys,” Jessica sobbed into the camera, her voice quivering with expertly calibrated vulnerability. “I’m making this video because I am genuinely terrified. Yesterday was my nephew’s birthday. I drove four hours through severe weather to bring him gifts, to celebrate family
and what I walked into was an ambush.”

She paused, dabbing her eye with the tissue, making sure the angle captured her trembling lip.

“My sister, Sarah, has been deeply envious of my career and independence ever since her husband passed. She has systematically turned my father against me, poisoning his mind with lies about money. Yesterday, when I tried to give Jacob his gifts, Sarah completely lost control. She smashed the toys I brought him on the floor. She screamed at me, called me disgusting names
and then my father threatened my life.”

She began to weep harder, clutching her chest.

“He took off his wedding ring, threw it at my mother, and told me that if I didn't hand over my business savings to Sarah, he would fabricate criminal charges against me with his friends in the local police department. I had to flee for my life. I am currently in a safe location. If anything happens to me, I want the world to know who is responsible.”

The video already had over four hundred thousand views and twelve thousand comments.

*“Omg Jessica stay strong!! Call the FBI!!”*

*“What kind of sister does that?! Sarah Vance is an absolute monster!”*

*“Expose her workplace! Where does she work? Cancel this psycho!”*

*“Look at her sister’s Facebook, she looks like a total bitter Karen. Protect Jessica at all costs!”*

A cold sweat broke out across my back. Two comments down, someone had already posted the name and address of the pediatric clinic where I worked as an intake receptionist.

*“She works at Oakwood Pediatric Health. Call them and demand they fire this abuser!”*

My phone rang. The screen displayed my clinic manager’s name: *Dr. Elena Warren*.

I took a trembling breath and answered. “Dr. Warren?”

“Sarah,” Dr. Warren said, her tone hurried and severely strained. “Are you seeing what’s happening online? Our clinic phone lines have been jammed since six-fifteen this morning. We’ve received over eighty hostile calls from people threatening to boycott the practice and protest outside the building. One person claimed you were mentally unstable and dangerous around children.”

“Dr. Warren, it’s a lie!” I pleaded, panic clawing at my throat. “It’s my sister. She’s an influencer. She made up a completely fabricated story because my father caught her committing grand larceny and insurance fraud yesterday!”

“Sarah, I know you. I know the kind of person and mother you are,” Dr. Warren said gently, but firmly. “But our primary obligation is to the safety of our patients. I cannot have protestors or internet vigilantes harassing parents in our waiting room. I need you to take administrative leave. Unpaid, until this storm blows over.”

“Dr. Warren, please
I live paycheck to paycheck. I have Jacob—”

“I’m sorry, Sarah. My hands are tied by the board. Please do not come into the office today.”

The line went dead.

I dropped the phone onto the bed and buried my face in my hands. The walls felt like they were closing in. Even miles away, even after being caught red-handed, Jessica possessed the power to reach into my life and tear away my livelihood with a six-minute video recorded on a telephone.

“Sarah?”

Dad was standing in the doorway of my bedroom, holding two mugs of black coffee. He had heard every word.

“She posted a video, Dad,” I choked out, looking up at him with hot tears burning my cheeks. “She told her followers that I smashed Jacob’s toys, that you threatened her life, and that we’re trying to extort her. They’re doxxing me. They called my job. I’ve been suspended.”

Dad set the mugs down on the dresser. His face didn't register panic. It hardened into something resembling solid granite.

“Drink your coffee,” he said quietly.

“Dad, you don't understand! She has half a million followers! The internet doesn't care about the truth! They’re going to ruin us before we ever get inside a courtroom!”

Dad reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number on speaker.

After two rings, a crisp, professional voice answered. “Arthur Vance & Associates, this is Arthur.”

“Arthur,” Dad said. “It’s your brother David.”

“David? Good lord, I haven't heard from you in three years. What's wrong?”

“I need you to clear your schedule today, Arthur,” Dad said, his eyes locked on mine. “And I need you to call the digital forensics division at the state bureau. My daughter Jessica just committed aggravated defamation and tortious interference across interstate lines. And this time, we have the lake house security footage.”
