Chapter 8 - Desperate Measures

When a narcissist loses control of their victim, they attempt to control how other people view the victim.

By Thursday afternoon, Helen and Khloe realized the legal walls were closing in. Claire Bennett’s cease-and-desist letter had effectively barred them from contacting me, Daniel, or my in-laws under penalty of criminal harassment charges.

So, Khloe did what any desperate influencer-wannabe does when cornered by reality: she took to social media.

We were sitting in a cliffside café in Imerovigli, sharing a platter of grilled octopus and chilled white wine, when my personal Instagram account pinged with dozens of direct messages from high school acquaintances, old college friends, and distant relatives.

Khloe had posted a three-minute TikTok video, which she had cross-posted to Facebook and Instagram.

Sitting on the floor of her unfurnished bedroom, wearing an oversized gray sweatshirt and wiping away dramatic tears, she addressed the camera with a trembling lower lip.

“I never thought I’d have to make a video like this,” she whispered, her voice cracked to perfection. “As many of you know, I’m pregnant with my first child—a little girl. Last weekend was supposed to be a celebration of love for our family at my sister Lauren’s wedding. Instead, it turned into the most humiliating, emotionally abusive night of my life.”

She went on to tell a completely fabricated sob story.

According to Khloe, she had planned a “gentle, joyful family surprise” with Mom’s blessings to share their happiness. But because my heart was “filled with jealousy and unresolved childhood competition,” I had deliberately sabotaged the moment, humiliated her in front of a hundred guests, stolen a vacation that Mom had supposedly purchased for her as a baby shower gift, and left her stranded and homeless while I flew off to a five-star private resort in Europe.

“She even canceled my health insurance while I’m carrying her niece,” Khloe sobbed into the lens, conveniently conflating her expired streaming apps and auto insurance with actual medical care. “My boyfriend left me because of the emotional trauma, and now the travel company is threatening to arrest my elderly mother because Lauren reported her own family for fraud. Please… if anyone knows how to reach my sister, tell her to drop the charges. We just want peace.”

Within twelve hours, the video had racked up nearly eighty thousand views on TikTok. The comments were an initial swamp of performative outrage:

*“What kind of monster sister ruins her pregnant sibling’s life like this?”*

*“Family comes first! Boycott whatever corporate company she works for!”*

*“The bridezilla to end all bridezillas.”*

Daniel watched the video over my shoulder, his expression darkening with genuine fury. “This is slander. Defamation per se. She is publicly accusing you of crimes you didn't commit while covering up her own fraud.”

I looked at the screen, and to Daniel’s surprise, I didn’t cry. I didn’t even raise my voice.

I smiled.

“Daniel,” I said softly, “what is the golden rule of live event production?”

Daniel paused, looking at me carefully. “Never let the audience see the backstage panic. And always keep the master tape.”

“Exactly,” I said.

I picked up my phone and called Lena, my wedding coordinator.

Lena was still in Columbus, wrapping up vendor settlements. She answered within three rings. “Lauren! Are you seeing this trash your sister posted? My assistant just showed me. I am ready to murder someone on your behalf.”

“Lena,” I said, my voice crisp and authoritative. “Call Marcus, the DJ. Did his multi-camera livestream recording capture the entire dance floor from the mezzanine?”

“Every single millimeter in 4K,” Lena answered immediately. “Including the audio feed of Tyler admitting Mom bought the tickets on your emergency card, the visual of Khloe pulling the smoke canisters from underneath table four, the exact moment the pink powder blasted our six-thousand-dollar custom drapery, and the projection screen showing the itemized bank statements.”

“Good,” I said. “Download the raw, unedited footage. Hand it directly to Claire Bennett. Then, send an official venue press release from your agency’s corporate account. Post the unedited video on your venue’s public Facebook page with the caption: *‘Setting the record straight regarding the unauthorized hazardous pyrotechnics incident at our private ballroom event.’*”

“Oh, you are ruthless,” Lena breathed, her voice dripping with sheer delight. “I will have Marcus upload the clip within forty minutes.”

“Wait,” I added. “Make sure you include the carbon copy of the venue contract where Mom forged my initials on the special-effects waiver. Tag Khloe’s personal handle.”

An hour later, the counter-strike dropped.

The venue didn’t post an emotional rant. They posted an immaculate, crystal-clear, four-minute high-definition video package.

The clip showed our elegant first dance beginning in quiet romance. Then, it showed Khloe and Helen deliberately creeping behind the DJ table, the audio capturing Helen whispering, *“Do it now, before she sits down, she won’t dare stop it in front of Daniel’s boss.”*

The footage showed the toxic pink cloud choking elderly guests at table two, the ruined three-tier cake, Tyler’s horrified outburst when he realized the vacation was stolen, and my calm, professional voice taking the microphone to expose the twelve-thousand-dollar theft with audited receipts on the fifty-foot projection screen.

Underneath the post, Claire Bennett added a single, pinned legal statement from the firm:

*“The Vance family matter is currently the subject of an active criminal investigation overseen by the Columbus Police Department regarding felony uttering and grand theft. Any further defamatory public statements published online will be met with immediate supplemental civil litigation for tortious interference and defamation per se.”*

The internet’s pivot was instantaneous, brutal, and total.

Within two hours, Khloe’s comment section became a graveyard of mocked entitlement. Commenters who had sympathized with her thirty minutes earlier returned to skewer her:

*“GIRL, WE SAW THE 4K FOOTAGE! You set off an industrial smoke bomb next to the food?!”*

*“Not her calling a 12k stolen credit card charge a ‘baby gift’ 💀”*

*“The projection screen receipts had timestamps! The bride is an absolute legend!”*

*“Tyler ran for the hills and he was 100% justified. Pack your bags, sis.”*

By evening, Khloe’s TikTok account was completely deleted.

The stage had collapsed on the performers.
