Chapter 10 - Brenda's Surprise Visit

Graham sat pinned against the vinyl booth, completely unable to meet my eyes. The truth hung between us like poison.
"I'm staying at my mother's with Theo through the weekend," I said, sliding out of the booth. "Do not come there. Do not call me. I need to consult a lawyer about our finances, Graham. Because right now, I don't know who you are, but you are not the man I married."
I left him sitting there with the cold coffee and the bank statement.
By Saturday morning, however, Brenda Miller wasn't interested in waiting for an apology.
I was at our marital house alone, having dropped Theo at the local library with my sister for an hour while I packed a week’s worth of my clothes. The front door clicked open without a knock.
Brenda walked into the foyer, wearing her beige cashmere coat and carrying her designer leather handbag. She didn't look like a woman suffering from a Thanksgiving migraine. She looked like an inspector entering a substandard property.
"Margo," she said, shutting the door behind her with an authoritative snap. "We need to talk."
I stopped at the top of the stairs, a laundry basket in my arms. "How did you get in here, Brenda?"
"Graham gave me a key five years ago, dear. Don't be dramatic," she said smoothly, setting her purse on the entryway table. "Now, come down here. This nonsense has gone on quite long enough."
I set the basket down, walked down the stairs, and stood on the bottom step, looking directly into her face. "You need to leave. Graham isn't here, and you are not welcome in this house."
Brenda let out that familiar, patronizing sigh—the exact sigh she had given over my turkey on Thursday afternoon.
"Margo, let's stop playing games. You’ve thrown your little tantrum. You took the bird, you made a scene, you got everyone's attention. But you need to understand your position here." Brenda took two steps closer, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Graham is my son. This family was built decades before you showed up, and it will remain long after you’re gone if you push this too far."

"Is that a threat, Brenda?"
"It’s reality, darling. Walter and I have resources you couldn't dream of. If you try to tear Graham away from us, or if you think you can take our grandson and use him as leverage, you will find out very quickly how small you really are. Graham will do what I tell him to do. He always has."
