Chapter 4 - The RetaliationWe found out by Tuesday morning that Olivia had no intention of staying away.

She didn't call, and she didn't show up at our front door. Instead, she launched her counter-attack where it would hurt us the most: socially and professionally.

I was in the middle of reviewing client contracts at my desk when my phone started buzzing incessantly. Text messages from mutual friends, notifications from local community groups, and an email from the director of the neighborhood association flooded in all at once.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I opened the neighborhood Facebook group.

At the top of the feed was a long, meticulously crafted post by Olivia. Attached to it was a heavily edited, thirty-second video clip from Maya’s birthday party. The video started right at the moment Olivia walked over to the cake table. It omitted her pushing me, omitted her snide remarks, and cut off the audio just as she bumped into my arm—making it look like I had lost my temper, lunged at her, and accidentally tripped over the cake stand in a drunken or unhinged rage.

The caption was a masterclass in manipulative victimhood:

“Heartbroken today. Tried to quietly attend my niece’s birthday party to support my family, only to be subjected to explosive hostility and verbal abuse. I was simply standing near the table when unprovoked aggression ruined a little girl's special day. Praying for my family to find the healing and professional help they clearly need.”

Beneath the post, the comment section was already a raging inferno of outrage. Neighbors who had smiled and waved to me just two days before were now leaving venomous remarks.

“Disgusting behavior!” wrote one woman I had volunteered with at the school bake sale. “Some people shouldn’t be parents.”

“I always knew there was something off about her,” another chimed in.

My stomach churned. The sheer audacity of it—using a manipulated video to paint me as the unhinged villain while she played the innocent martyr—was breathtaking.

Before I could even call Shawn to tell him what his sister had done, my office door swung open. My boss, Mr. Henderson, stood in the doorway, his expression grim and tight.

“Aaron, we need to talk in my office. Right now.”

I stood up, my legs feeling like lead. “Mr. Henderson, I can explain—”

“Just come inside,” he interrupted, turning on his heel.

When I sat across from him in his glass-walled office, he slid his iPad across the mahogany desk. The screen was playing Olivia’s Facebook video.

“One of our major corporate clients just emailed this to me,” Mr. Henderson said coldly, resting his elbows on the desk. “They saw it shared through a mutual connection in the country club. Aaron, our firm handles high-profile family law and estate planning. Optics are everything to our partners. When a video of one of our senior associates looking unstable and chaotic at a children’s party goes viral locally, it reflects poorly on the entire firm.”

“It’s a lie, sir,” I said, my voice rising in panic. “That video is edited! She shoved me! Several neighbors saw it happen—they even offered to be witnesses—”

“I don’t care about neighborhood politics, Aaron,” Mr. Henderson cut me off firmly. “I care about the firm’s reputation. Until you can get this PR nightmare sorted out and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is a smear campaign, I’m placing you on mandatory two-week administrative leave. Effective immediately.”

The room seemed to spin. Mandatory leave. Without a public refutation, that leave could easily turn into termination. Olivia hadn't just attacked my dignity at a birthday party; she was systematically trying to starve my family out.

When I walked out of the office building into the harsh midday sun, my hands were shaking so badly I could barely unlock my car. I pulled out my phone and dialed Shawn.

He answered on the first ring. “Aaron? Are you okay? I just saw Liv’s Facebook post—she’s insane, she cut out the part where she shoved you—”

“She got me fired, Shawn,” I said, my voice cracking as tears of pure fury pricked the backs of my eyes. “Or suspended pending termination. My boss just saw the video.”

There was a long, dead silence on the other end of the line. Then Shawn whispered, “We need to destroy her.”
