Chapter 8 - The Dawn of Command

The following morning broke clear and brilliant over the Potomac River.

The rain from the night before had washed the city clean, leaving the autumn leaves on the grounds of the Washington Navy Yard glowing with amber and crimson fire.

In the private courtyard behind the historic Admiral’s Quarters, a small, intimate gathering stood at attention. There were no cameras, no defense contractors, and no socialites looking for high-dollar connections. Only thirty men and women in pristine dress uniforms: the surviving members of Ryan’s old reconnaissance company, General Vance Sterling, Secretary Thomas Vance, and a handful of senior commanders who had carried the burden of two decades of war.

Lily stood beside me, wearing her favorite blue wool coat and shiny black shoes. On her head rested her paper crown, smoothed out, retaped at the seam, and reinforced with a ring of sturdy cardstock. Pinned to the center of the crown, right above the purple glitter glue, gleamed General Sterling’s solid silver four-star challenge coin.

"Attention to orders," the master of ceremonies called out, his voice ringing crisp in the morning chill.

General Sterling stepped forward onto the low stone dais, a wooden case resting in his hands.

"By direction of the President of the United States," Sterling read, "the promotion of Samantha Walker to the rank of Brigadier General, United States Army, is hereby confirmed by the Senate. She is directed to assume immediate command of the Special Reconnaissance and Logistics Integrity Directorate, with full authority over defense procurement verification, counter-intelligence logistics, and theater reconnaissance assets."

Sterling set the citation aside and looked down at Lily.

"Miss Walker," Sterling said, smiling warmly. "Would you assist me in pinning your mother's rank?"

Lily beamed. She took my hand as I knelt on the cobblestone pathway, bringing my shoulder down to her level. With careful, serious determination, Lily took the gleaming silver star from General Sterling’s velvet box and pressed the dual pins through the shoulder tab of my service coat. Sterling pressed the backing securely into place, then repeated the process on my other shoulder.

A single silver star on each shoulder.

"There," Lily whispered proudly, patting my lapel with her small hands. "Now you're a Star Woman, Mommy."

"Thank you, my darling," I whispered, kissing her forehead.

General Sterling snapped to attention and delivered a razor-sharp salute. "Congratulations, Brigadier General Walker."

I rose, returning the salute with steady, calm certainty. "Thank you, General."

The assembled officers erupted into disciplined applause. As the formation relaxed, Secretary Vance walked over, holding a leather-bound folder under his arm.

"The federal judge in Alexandria denied bail for both Richard and Evelyn this morning," Vance said quietly, offering a warm smile. "Walker Logistics has been placed under immediate federal receivership. All assets have been frozen, and the Department of Justice is rerouting twelve million dollars in seized overseas funds directly into the Armed Forces Survivors Relief Foundation."

"And the contracts?" I asked.

"Canceled," Vance said firmly. "Every single piece of counterfeit cable and substandard armor has been pulled from theater inventories. Your husband's warnings were finally heard, Samantha. Because of Ryan's records—and because of your courage to bring them to light—we estimate over six hundred vehicles were refitted with certified equipment before deployment this month. You two saved lives."

I closed my eyes for a moment, feeling a long-held knot in my chest finally loosen and release.

"Thank you, Mr. Secretary."

"The Director’s office at Fort Belvoir is ready for you on Monday," Vance added. "Take the weekend, General. You’ve earned it."
