Chapter 5 - The Collapse (1800 Words)The trial of United States v. Ethan Vance and Lorraine Vance became the most publicized legal spectacle the city had seen in a decade.

Because of the overwhelming weight of the forensic evidence, the state toxicology panels, and the financial records I had provided, Ethan’s high-priced legal team tried desperately to secure a plea bargain to avoid a public trial.

Two weeks after the arrests, Marcus Cole called me into his office to review the final plea terms offered by the defense.

“Ethan is agreeing to plead guilty to federal wire fraud, pension embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery,” Marcus explained. “His defense team is proposing a fifteen-year prison sentence, along with complete financial restitution to the pension fund and full surrender of all marital assets to Maya.”

“And Lorraine?” I asked.

“Lorraine is pleading guilty to accomplice to felony poisoning and conspiracy,” Marcus said. “She’s looking at seven years in a federal facility.”

I sat quietly for a moment, thinking of my daughter’s split lip, the lost baby, and the months of silent terror she had endured inside that cold mansion.

“Is Maya satisfied with these terms?” I asked.

“Maya signed the victim approval document an hour ago, Nora,” Marcus said softly. “She told me she doesn't want to spend the next two years testifying in a courtroom. She wants to close this chapter and move on with her life.”

I nodded slowly. “Then accept the plea.”

The following month, the final court hearing took place to formalize the sentencing and the divorce decree.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Maya’s hand tightly.

Ethan stood at the defense table dressed in a orange prison jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed at his waist, his head bowed. Beside him sat Lorraine, looking frail, stripped of her designer clothes, jewels, and arrogant posture.

The judge looked down over his glasses at Ethan and Lorraine with absolute disgust.

“Mr. Vance,” the judge spoke, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You were blessed with wealth, privilege, and social standing. Yet, out of pure financial greed and moral bankruptcy, you subjected your own wife to systematic chemical abuse, destroyed your company, and stole from hard-working employees. The court approves the joint plea agreement.”

BANG.

The gavel struck the block.

“Ethan Vance, you are sentenced to fifteen years in federal custody. Lorraine Vance, you are sentenced to seven years in federal custody. Court is adjourned.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to guide Ethan and Lorraine toward the rear security exit, Ethan turned his head, his eyes locking onto mine for one last second.

There was no arrogance left in his gaze, no threats, no corporate vanity. Only the hollow, terrifying realization that he had brought complete destruction upon his entire life because he underestimated a mother’s love.

I didn't glare back at him. I simply looked away, turning my attention entirely to my daughter.
