Chapter 7 - The Trap is SetThe next morning, Attorney Arthur Vance’s downtown office was a hub of intense activity.

When Vance viewed the crisp, high-definition security footage of my mother screaming on our porch—along with the crystal-clear audio recording of her threatening to "ruin our lives" if we didn't hand over the title to the Columbus house—he actually clapped his hands together in professional delight.

"This is extraordinary," Vance chuckled, replaying the footage on his large desktop monitor. "Look at this. Timestamped, high-definition, unedited. Your mother claims in her sworn affidavit that Ethan lunged at her and threatened her life. But this video shows Ethan standing entirely inside the doorway, completely motionless, speaking in a calm voice while your mother physically assaults him by spitting toward his face."

"And Lauren," Ethan added, pointing to the screen, "signed an affidavit under penalty of perjury claiming she witnessed Ethan commit battery."

"Perjury in an ex-parte court filing is a serious offense," Vance said, his tone turning deadly serious. "Judges do not tolerate being lied to. It undermines the entire judicial system. When a litigant uses a sworn affidavit to fabricate a violent assault just to secure a emergency order, judges react with extreme prejudice."

"What do we do now?" I asked.

"We don't just file an emergency motion to vacate her temporary restraining order," Vance explained, leaning back. "We request an immediate, expedited hearing in front of Judge Marcus Vance in Delaware County Family and Civil Court. We bring the video evidence. We bring the bank records. And we invite your mother and sister to take the witness stand under oath before showing the judge the video."

My heart did a nervous flip. "You want them to testify before they know we have the video?"

"Precisely," Vance said, a brilliant litigation strategy unfolding. "In their court filings, they haven't realized your porch camera was active. They think it was just a smart doorbell without cloud recording. If they take the stand and repeat those lies under oath in front of a judge, they lock themselves into felony perjury. Once they finish their testimony, we submit the video into evidence."

"It’s a trap," Ethan said slowly, a cold grin forming on his face.

"It is a legal trap of their own making," Vance corrected. "They built the scaffold; we are simply allowing them to step onto it."

While Vance prepared the emergency court filings, Ethan and I took steps to secure our personal lives. We transferred all our secondary savings to a completely new bank institution that my family had zero knowledge of. We notified Lily’s preschool, providing them with photos of Diane and Lauren, explicitly placing them on a strict "No-Pick-Up" security ban with local law enforcement on speed dial.

By Thursday afternoon, the court process server delivered our counter-filings directly to Diane and Lauren. We had secured an expedited emergency hearing set for Monday morning at 9:00 AM at the county courthouse.

That evening, my father called me again from a burner phone.

"Emily," he rasped, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "What are you doing? Your mother received the court summons! She’s going crazy! She’s screaming that she’s going to put Ethan in prison!"

"Dad," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "Tell Mom to hire a very good defense lawyer. She’s going to need one."

"Emily, she’s your mother! You can't do this to your family! Lauren is crying! If she gets a criminal record, she’ll lose her real estate license!"

"Lauren should have thought about her license before she signed a fake affidavit accusing my husband of a crime," I retorted sharply. "You had your chance to fix this, Dad. You chose to sit back and watch them try to destroy my life and Ethan's career. Now you can sit back and watch the consequences."

"Emily, please—"

"Don't call this number again, Robert," I said, using his first name for the first time in my life. "See you in court."

I ended the call, set the phone down on the kitchen table, and for the first time in three days, I slept deeply through the entire night.
