Chapter 4 - The Blackmail Trap(Length: ~1800 words)

I handed my phone directly to Ethan.
As his eyes scanned my mother's blackmail text message, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.
"She’s bluffing," Ethan said, his voice cold as ice. "My father ran an honest small-business trucking firm for thirty years before he passed away. He never committed tax fraud in his life."
"She’s not bluffing about having files, Ethan," Michael interjected, leaning forward. "Mom worked as a bookkeeper for Dad's independent engineering firm in the nineties. She kept personal dossiers on every family member, every neighbor, and every business partner we ever interacted with. She called it her 'insurance policy.'"
"An insurance policy?" I asked in absolute disgust. "She gathered dirt on her own family?!"
"Whenever anyone threatened to report Dad’s temper or question how she ran the household," Michael explained, "Mom would drop a subtle hint about a tax anomaly, an old rumor, or a private secret. That's how she kept everyone in line for thirty years. That's why Aunt Sarah and our cousins never spoke up."
I took a deep, steady breath, feeling a sharp, cold clarity settle over my mind.
"She thinks she can use fear to control us, just like Dad used his belt," I said softly, looking at Caleb sleeping peacefully on the hospital gurney. "She thinks I’m still the quiet six-year-old girl she sent away to Ohio."
I pulled out my phone and tapped a reply to my mother's text:
“Bring your dossiers to the courthouse tomorrow at 9:00 AM, Mom. Let’s see who goes to prison first.”
I turned to Detective Torres, who was standing near the nurses' station outside our room. "Detective, my mother just sent me a text message attempting to blackmail my husband to force us to drop felony charges."
Detective Torres’s eyes lit up with predatory professional focus. "Show me the screen."
After reviewing the text, Detective Torres pulled out her radio. "Dispatch, this is Torres. I need an emergency search warrant authorized for the residence of Evelyn Vance for evidence of extortion, witness tampering, and illegal possession of financial records."
By 1:00 AM, Caleb was formally discharged from the hospital with clear instructions for rest and monitoring.
We drove to Michael’s house—a secure, two-story home in a quiet suburban neighborhood—where Ethan and I decided to stay for the night. We locked the doors, engaged the security system, and put Caleb to bed in Michael’s guest room.
At 2:30 AM, while the house was quiet, Michael walked into the kitchen carrying two mugs of warm tea.
He set one down in front of me at the kitchen island.
"Thank you for standing up today, Jess," Michael said softly, sitting opposite me. "If you hadn't fought back when Dad dropped his belt, I probably would have stayed silent forever."
"You saved Caleb, Michael," I said, reaching across the counter to squeeze his hand. "If you hadn't spoken up about 1999, Mom would have convinced the police it was just an accident. You gave us the truth."
"The truth is only half the battle," Michael warned gently. "Mom has money saved in a private offshore trust account. She’s already hired Arthur Vance—Dad’s cousin and a notorious corporate defense attorney—to represent Dad at the bail hearing tomorrow."
"Arthur Vance?" I scoffed. "The lawyer who got caught bribing a municipal judge three years ago?"
"The very same," Michael nodded grimly. "Arthur knows every loophole in county law. He’s going to argue that Dad is an elderly man with high blood pressure who poses zero flight risk, and he’ll try to get him released on a low personal recognizance bond."
"Not if I have anything to say about it," I said, opening my laptop on the island counter.
"What are you doing?" Michael asked.
"I’m calling Cousin Leah," I replied, a sharp smile spreading across my lips. "It's time to make sure Arthur Vance and the judge see exactly what the public thinks of a man who snaps a belt at a three-year-old child."
By 3:15 AM, with Leah’s permission, the unedited video of the birthday party incident was uploaded to a local community news portal alongside a detailed statement regarding the 1999 cover-up.
Within two hours, the video had been shared over forty thousand times across local social media networks.
