Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

The door opened, and Eleanor Vance rushed into the office, her face blotchy, her mascara smeared beneath her eyes, leaning heavily on Ryan’s arm. Ryan looked disheveled, his dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes dark with sleepless rage.

“Mr. Harrison!” Eleanor cried, ignoring me entirely. “You must stop the notice! My daughter has maliciously sabotaged my finances! She took money from my late husband’s estate and—”

She froze.

Her eyes finally registered Uncle Robert sitting beside me. The color instantly drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin a ghastly, pale gray.

“Robert?” she whispered.

“Hello, Eleanor,” Uncle Robert said coldly. “It’s been a while since you’ve answered my calls.”

Ryan slammed his palm down on the back of a leather chair. “What is this? Is this an ambush? Emily, call off your attack dogs! Harrison, can you process the forbearance or not?”

“Mr. Vance, take your hands off the furniture and sit down,” Harrison said in a voice of pure steel. “There will be no forbearance. And Mrs. Vance no longer has the authority to request one.”

Eleanor gripped the strap of her purse until her knuckles turned white. “What are you talking about? It is my house! Arthur left it to me!”

“Arthur left you a life estate conditional upon maintaining the mortgage,” Harrison corrected, pointing to the open file. “You defaulted. You also illegally diverted the pension funds intended for the mortgage escrow to your son’s personal accounts—a transaction our compliance department is currently reviewing.”

Ryan took a sharp step back, his eyes darting frantically toward the door. “Wait… what?”

“You knew,” I said, looking directly at my mother.

Eleanor turned to me, her lips trembling, but the facade of the helpless widow had vanished. In its place was the raw, snarling terror of a cornered predator.

“You don't understand anything!” Eleanor hissed, her voice shaking with bitter venom. “Arthur always loved you more! He looked at you like you were his greatest achievement, while he treated Ryan like a failure! He set up that trust behind my back to punish me! Everything I did was to protect my son!”

“You protected Ryan by stealing from Dad and bleeding me dry,” I said, my voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. “For four years, you let me work myself to the bone believing you were starving. You took my money, handed Dad’s pension to Ryan so he could buy toys and pay off his alimony, and then you sat across from me on Mother’s Day and told me I was worthless.”

“You are selfish!” Eleanor shrieked, tears of rage finally spilling down her cheeks. “A real daughter would have signed the deed over to her brother! A real daughter wouldn't have kept score!”

“Then I’m glad I’m not a real daughter,” I replied quietly.

Mr. Harrison cleared his throat, snapping the thick folder shut.

“Mrs. Vance, as of nine o'clock this morning, the deed has transferred exclusively to Emily Vance. The bank is accepting a payoff settlement from Emily’s personal assets to clear the primary lien. You have thirty days to vacate the premises on Maple Street.”
