Chapter 6 - The Family Smear CampaignBy Tuesday evening, the news had ripped through our extended family like a wildfire.

My phone didn't stop ringing for twelve hours straight. Uncles, aunts, cousins, and family friends who hadn't spoken to me in years suddenly discovered my number, calling with a mixture of outraged self-righteousness and sheer panic.

Aunt Sarah: "Nora, have you lost your absolute mind?! Calling the police on your own mother and brother over a business loan? Get down to the station and drop the charges right now!"

Uncle David: "Your mother spent her whole life raising you! How could you let her spend a night in a jail cell? You are dead to this family!"

I didn't answer a single call. I forwarded every voicemail directly to Rebecca Sloan’s legal team to be logged as potential harassment and witness tampering evidence.

True to her narcissistic playbook, my mother—after being released on her own recognizance pending arraignment—had launched an immediate, scorched-earth smear campaign.

By Wednesday morning, a mass text had been forwarded to every relative in our extended family, accompanied by a screenshot of my corporate marketing website.

To our family and friends, It is with a broken heart that we share the betrayal of our daughter, Nora. Consumed by greed and narcissism, Nora has weaponized the legal system against her own grieving mother and hardworking brother over a minor corporate misunderstanding. She has cut off her family and proven she has no soul. Do not trust her.

Within an hour of the text going out, three of my largest corporate marketing clients called my office asking about "family legal troubles" mentioned on social media.

“Don't panic, Nora,” Rebecca Sloan told me over the phone when I called her in a cold sweat. “This is classic narcissistic retaliation. But it also crosses the line straight into civil defamation per se and tortious interference with business relations.”

“Can we sue them for defamation?” I asked, my fists clenched.

“We can do better than sue them,” Rebecca smiled darkly. “We can subpoena their communication records during discovery. Every single text, email, and social media post your mother and brother sent out to smear your name will be entered into evidence in the criminal fraud trial. They are actively adding obstruction of justice and witness retaliation charges to their rap sheet.”

While my family was busy burning their own ships, I focused entirely on my business and my peace. For the first time in thirty-two years, I wasn't worrying about whether my mother was angry at me, whether Kyle needed financial bail, or whether I was being a "good enough daughter."

I was simply existing. And for the first time in my life, existing felt like breathing clean air.
