Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at the CafeBy Monday morning, the fallout began to explode.

Marcus had delivered formal legal notices to all fourteen couples, notifying them that Stonehaven Celebrations Ltd. was an unauthorized fraudulent entity, that all contracts were null and void, and that no events would be permitted on the premises.

The backlash was instant and nuclear.

My phone rang continuously. Distraught brides, furious grooms, and aggressive fathers of the brides left hysterical messages.

At 1:00 PM, my brother Ethan called me from his car.

"Maddie, what the hell did you do?" he roared through the speaker. "Sam is hysterically crying at Mom's house! Couples are showing up at her apartment building! One guy threatened to sue her!"

"She stole $142,000 using my home, Ethan!" I shouted back. "She’s a criminal!"

"She's your sister!" Ethan yelled. "She made a mistake! She thought you’d agree once you saw how much money the venue could make! Meet us at Bistro 19 in an hour. We’re going to fix this as a family, or Dad is coming down there himself."

I agreed to meet. Not to negotiate, but because I wanted every word recorded.

When I walked into Bistro 19, the tension at the corner table was palpable. Sam sat between Mom and Ethan. She had no makeup on, her eyes were red and swollen, and she was clutching a damp tissue. But when she saw me walk up in my tailored blazer, her sad expression vanished, replaced by pure venom.

"You ruined everything," Sam spat before I even sat down.

"I saved myself from massive legal liability," I replied, placing my phone on the table. "Where is the $142,000, Sam?"

Sam looked away, crossing her arms tightly.

"Answer her, Sam," Ethan muttered, looking uneasy for the first time. "You still have the money in the business account, right? You can just refund them."

Sam bit her lip. A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the table.

"Sam?" Mom asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Where is the deposit money?"

"I... I had expenses," Sam whispered.

I leaned forward. "What expenses?"

"I had to build the brand!" Sam snapped, her voice rising so loud that patrons at nearby tables turned to look. "I leased a BMW for client meetings! I bought a new wardrobe! I paid $20,000 to an influencer agency to promote the venue online! I spent $15,000 on a deposit for my own destination wedding in Cabo!"

The air left the table.

Ethan stared at her in sheer disbelief. "You spent their deposits? You spent money for events that hadn't even happened on your own vacation?"

"I was going to replace it once the final balances were paid on the wedding days!" Sam sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "Maddie was supposed to let the first two weddings happen! If she had just let June 12th happen, I would have had $40,000 more!"

"You used my home as leverage for a Ponzi scheme," I said, my voice cold as steel.

"You have millions!" Sam screamed, standing up and slamming her hands on the table. "You sit up in your $8 million fortress while I struggle every single day! You owe me! You’ve always owed me!"

"I owe you nothing," I said, standing up to meet her gaze. "Every dollar I have was earned while you were out partying and blaming everyone else for your failed choices. You have 48 hours to return every dime you have left to those couples, or my lawyer delivers the criminal fraud file to the District Attorney."

"You wouldn't dare," Mom gasped, grabbing my wrist. "She’s your sister! You can't send her to prison!"

May you like

I pulled my wrist out of my mother's grip.

"Watch me."
