Chapter 10 - A Garden of White Carnations

One year later, the Moretti estate gardens were alive with color.

The scent of fresh earth, blooming roses, and sweet jasmine drifted on the afternoon breeze. Two hundred guests sat on elegant white chairs arranged across the sweeping emerald lawn—not ruthless syndicates bound by fear, but reformed captains, genuine friends, and allies who had embraced the new era of the Moretti house.

Under Gabriel’s leadership, the family’s dirty shipping routes had been dismantled, replaced by legitimate logistics firms and community investments. The syndicate still had teeth—nobody in Chicago dared challenge Gabriel Moretti—but the cruelty had been excised from the bone.

The string quartet began to play *Claire de Lune*.

I stood at the top of the terrace stairs in a simple, breathtaking gown of ivory lace, holding a bouquet of fresh white carnations.

Down the aisle, standing beside a floral arch overlooking the lake, was Gabriel. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo that highlighted his broad frame, his dark hair neatly trimmed, his face radiant with an open, unashamed love that stunned every associate who had only ever known his ruthless side.

In front of me, Lily walked down the aisle as our flower girl. She was six now, glowing with health and happiness in a white ruffled dress, joyfully tossing white petals onto the runner.

When Lily reached the altar, Gabriel didn't wait for protocol. He stepped forward, scooped her up in a warm hug, kissed her cheek, and set her gently beside his best man, Dante.

Then, he looked up at me.

As I walked down the aisle on my own two feet—no longer a runaway widow, no longer a maid hiding in the shadows—my heart felt lighter than air. Every scar, every cold basement, every tear Daniel and I had ever shed had led to this sacred ground.

When I reached Gabriel, he took both of my hands in his. His eyes were wet with unshed tears.

“You look like an angel, Rachel,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“And you look like a man who kept his promise,” I replied with a smile.

The vows were simple, spoken not from a script, but from the depths of two souls that had walked through hell to find sanctuary in each other.

When the minister pronounced us husband and wife, Gabriel wrapped his strong arms around my waist and lifted me off my feet, kissing me with a fierce, boundless passion that drew a thunderous roar of applause from the lawn. Lily clapped and cheered, jumping up and down beside Dante.

Later that evening, after the feast had wound down and the guests were dancing beneath the glowing fairy lights on the terrace, Gabriel, Lily, and I slipped away.

We drove thirty minutes west to a quiet, serene hill inside Oakridge Cemetery.

The sun was setting behind the weeping willows, painting the sky in ribbons of gold and violet. We walked hand in hand to the private granite memorial where Daniel Hayes lay at peace beneath a grand oak tree.

Carved into the stone were the words:

**DANIEL HAYES**

*A Brother, A Hero, A Guardian.*

*His Legacy Lives in the Light.*

Gabriel knelt down first. He placed his hand against the cool granite, bowing his head in silent, sacred communion with his fallen brother.

“We did it, Danny,” Gabriel murmured softly. “They are safe. They are loved. And they will never walk alone again.”

Lily stepped forward, holding a single, flawless white carnation—just like the one that had been crushed on the dining room floor a year ago.

She carefully laid the flower against the base of her father’s stone.

“Look, Daddy,” Lily whispered, smiling up at the sky. “I brought Uncle Gabe. He remembered.”

I knelt down beside Gabriel, resting my head against his shoulder. He wrapped his arm tightly around me, drawing Lily into our embrace.

The wind rustled through the oak branches above us, gentle and warm, like a quiet whisper of approval from a guardian angel watching from the clouds.

Daniel was at rest. The vipers were gone. And here, in the arms of the man who had redeemed us all, our life had finally begun.
