Chapter 8 - The Clearing StormThree days later, the front page of the Chicago Tribune sent shockwaves through the financial and social elite of the Midwest.

VANCE CAPITAL FRAUD EXPOSED: JULIAN ASHFORD ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CORPORATE EXTORTION SCHEME.

The article detailed how Julian Ashford and Richard Vance had conspired to loot Moretti Enterprises using insider access, fake shell companies, and attempted coercion. Federal agents had raided Vance Capital’s downtown headquarters at dawn, seizing millions in assets and hauling off several high-ranking executives in handcuffs.

As for Vivian Ashford, her society wedding announcements were replaced by police booking photos, and her father’s legal team was already crumbling under the weight of airtight evidence provided anonymously by Moretti Enterprises.

Back at the Moretti estate, the atmosphere had fundamentally changed. The cold, sterile tension that Vivian had brought into the house like a poison was entirely gone.

Miss Evie had returned home from the hospital on Thursday, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket and seated in a comfortable armchair by the bay window in the sunroom.

I was standing near the French doors, dusting the mahogany bookshelf, when heavy footsteps echoed down the hall.

Adrian walked into the sunroom. He was dressed in a casual charcoal sweater and dark slacks, looking far more relaxed than I had ever seen him. He held a small, silver-framed photograph in his hands.

"How are you feeling today, Evie?" Adrian asked, kneeling beside her chair and handing her a cup of warm chamomile tea with honey—just the way she liked it.

"Better now that you're not hovering like a mother hen," Miss Evie teased gently, taking a sip from the porcelain cup. "And stop asking the doctors to check my blood pressure every two hours. I'm fine."

Adrian chuckled, shaking his head. "Protocol is protocol. Besides, I have an announcement to make."

Evie raised an eyebrow, looking between Adrian and me. "Oh? Did you finally decide to fire the estate manager for letting those corporate rats into the archive?"

"Henderson has been promoted to Chief Director of Operations," Adrian smiled. "And... I’ve made a few other staffing adjustments."

He stood up, walking over to where I stood holding my feather duster. He reached out and gently took the duster from my hand, setting it down on a side table.

"Sophie," Adrian said, his dark eyes locked onto mine with a warmth that completely disarmed me.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?" I asked, my heart doing a strange, unfamiliar flip in my chest.

"You aren't a housemaid anymore," he said clearly, loud enough for Miss Evie to hear. "Effective immediately, you are being appointed as the Head Director of Estate Administration and Executive Healthcare Logistics. Your salary will be multiplied by five, your mother’s medical debts have been paid in full by the Moretti Foundation, and your sister’s tuition is covered through her master's degree."

I froze. My jaw dropped open, and I stared at him in utter disbelief.

"Wh—what? Mr. Moretti, I can't accept this! I don't have a business degree, I’m just—"

"You have loyalty, intelligence, and moral courage," Adrian interrupted softly, stepping closer. "Qualities that money can't buy, and qualities I desperately need by my side. Besides," he glanced over at Miss Evie, who was beaming with absolute delight, "Evie threatens to resign if I don't give you a promotion."

"I certainly do," Miss Evie chimed in, setting her teacup down with a triumphant clatter. "About time someone with brains ran this household."
