Chapter 10 - Irreplaceable

Six months later.

The summer breeze swept through the expansive rose gardens behind the Rossi estate, carrying the scent of sea salt and blooming jasmine.

The garden was filled with soft fairy lights strung between the ancient oak trees. A long wooden dining table was set with fresh flowers, rustic bread, and wine.

Finn was running across the lush green lawn, laughing hysterically as he chased a golden retriever puppy Victor had surprised him with for his sixth birthday. The boy’s cheeks were rosy, his laughter clear and bright, free of the haunting shadows that had once gripped him.

Harper sat on the garden swing, watching Finn with a contented smile. She wore a stunning royal-blue wrap dress that hugged her curves proudly, the soft fabric draping over her hips, her hair falling in loose, glossy waves over her bare shoulders.

She looked radiant, happy, and thoroughly at home.

Footsteps rustled across the grass.

Victor walked over, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark trousers, and no gun. The harsh, razor-sharp lines of his face had softened over the months, replaced by an easy, confident warmth that made him dangerously handsome.

He handed her a glass and sat down on the swing beside her.

Their shoulders touched. Harper didn't move away. In fact, she leaned slightly into his broad warmth.

“He’s getting fast,” Harper said, nodding toward Finn, who was currently rolling in the grass with the puppy.

“Takes after his mother’s side,” Victor smiled softly. It was the first time he had mentioned his late wife without pain in his voice. The grief was still there, but it had healed into a quiet memory, no longer a poison that kept him trapped in the dark.

Victor turned on the swing to look at Harper.

The summer twilight cast golden highlights across her skin. He reached out, his hand sliding smoothly over hers, his fingers lacing tightly between hers.

Harper looked down at their joined hands, then up into his eyes.

“What are you thinking about, Victor?”

Victor took a slow breath. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

Harper’s breath hitched. Her heart began to beat wildly against her ribs.

“I’m thinking about seven words,” Victor said, his voice deep, rich, and filled with a tenderness that made Harper’s eyes sting with tears. “Seven words I said on a rainy night when I was a blind, arrogant fool.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a flawless, emerald-cut diamond ring set in rose gold, timeless and magnificent.

“I told you that no one would ever want you,” Victor whispered, his hand gently lifting to cup her cheek, his thumb caressing the soft curve of her jawline. “And every day since that morning you left, I have thanked God that you proved me wrong. Because I don't just want you, Harper.”

He slid off the swing and lowered himself onto one knee on the soft grass before her.

This time, it wasn't out of defeat or terror.

It was out of pure, devoted adoration.

“I need you,” Victor said, looking up into her eyes with fierce devotion. “Finn needs you. This house has no soul without you. You taught my son how to feel safe. You taught me how to live again. You are the anchor of my life, Harper Bennett. And if you let me, I will spend the rest of my days proving to you that you are wanted, cherished, and utterly irreplaceable.”

Tears spilled over Harper’s eyelashes, warm and joyful, trailing down her cheeks.

She looked down at the man who had laid down his pride, his darkness, and his armor just to love her the way she deserved to be loved.

From across the lawn, Finn came running over, the puppy tumbling behind him.

“Harper! Are you going to be my real mom now?” Finn asked, his eyes wide and hopeful, looking between his father on one knee and Harper on the swing.

Harper laughed through her tears. She leaned forward, throwing her arms around Victor’s neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

“Yes,” Harper whispered against his ear. “Yes, Victor. A thousand times yes.”

Victor let out a breathless laugh of pure relief. He wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her effortlessly off the swing and spinning her around beneath the fairy lights.

Finn cheered, jumping up and down with the puppy barking happily around their ankles.

When Victor set Harper down, he didn't let go of her waist. He pulled her flush against his chest, looking down at her with unfiltered adoration, before leaning in and pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, and reverent kiss that sealed their future together.
