Chapter 7 - The SettlementThree days later, the formal plea hearing was held in Courtroom 3B of the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

The room was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists, legal observers, local business owners, and citizens filled every wooden pew. The scandal that had rocked Charlotte’s high society had reached its final, dramatic conclusion.

Ethan Prescott sat at the defense table wearing a orange county jail jumpsuit. His hands were cuffed at his waist, his ankles shackled, his head lowered as two armed bailiffs stood behind his chair. Beside him sat Brandon and Margaret, both wearing muted grey prison attire, their former glamour completely stripped away.

Their high-priced legal team stood in silence as the Honorable Judge Katherine Vance took her seat on the elevated bench.

“Court is now in session,” Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing clearly through the silent room. “We are here to review and execute the negotiated plea agreements for Defendants Ethan Prescott, Brandon Prescott, and Margaret Prescott.”

The District Attorney stood up, presenting the signed settlement documents.

“Your Honor,” the DA stated, “the State and the victims have agreed to the terms. Defendant Ethan Prescott has entered a plea of guilty to Felony Domestic Battery, Felonious Drugging, and Unlawful Restraint. Under the terms of this agreement, he is sentenced to ten years in the North Carolina Department of Corrections without early parole.”

Ethan flinched, a tear spilling down his hollow cheek, but he said nothing.

“Defendants Brandon Prescott and Margaret Prescott,” the DA continued, “have entered guilty pleas to Federal Infrastructure Fraud, Tax Evasion, and Obstruction of Justice. They are sentenced to seven years and five years respectively in federal custody, alongside full asset forfeiture totaling thirty-five million dollars.”

Judge Vance reviewed the documents, her face set into a hard, unforgiving line. She looked over her reading glasses at the three defendants sitting at the table.

“In my twenty years on the bench,” Judge Vance said, her voice dripping with absolute disdain, “I have rarely seen a family use their wealth and influence with such grotesque cruelty. You believed that your money placed you above the law. You believed you could abuse an innocent young woman, lock her away, and buy the silence of the courts.”

She picked up her heavy wooden gavel.

“You learned the hard way that justice in this state is not for sale,” Judge Vance declared.

CRACK!

The sound of the gavel striking the wooden block echoed like a cannon shot through the courtroom.

“Defendants are remanded to immediate custody to begin their sentences,” Judge Vance commanded. “Court is adjourned.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to guide the three Prescotts toward the holding cell doors, Ethan turned his head, looking toward the front row of the gallery where Emily and I sat.

His eyes were filled with terrified regret, but Emily didn't flinch. She sat straight, her hand resting securely in mine, looking at him not with anger, but with complete, cool indifference.

He was no longer her monster. He was simply a memory that had been buried.
