Chapter 1 - The Cold FortressWinter winds struck the towering glass windows of the Moretti estate, a sprawling twenty-thousand-square-foot fortress built among the secluded cliffs of upstate New York. Inside, the mansion reflected extraordinary wealth. Marble floors imported from Italy stretched through its vast corridors. Crystal chandeliers fractured the light across soaring ceilings, while an army of employees moved through the house with quiet precision.

Among them was Nora.

At twenty-three years old and six months pregnant, she had learned how to make herself nearly invisible. Her uniform, a size too large to accommodate her growing belly, hung loosely from her thin frame. Her hands, once soft, had become cracked and raw from bleach, boiling water, and the endless work of scrubbing stone floors. She had accepted the estate's lowest-paying maid position because she had no other choice. Brody, the father of her unborn child, had disappeared in the middle of the night, leaving behind nothing but gambling debts and a landlord threatening to throw her into the freezing weather.

To Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, Nora's desperation made her useful. Mrs. Gable was a sharp-featured woman who controlled the estate staff with an iron hand, regarding Nora's pregnancy as an inconvenience to be exploited.

"Don't just stand there daydreaming, girl," Mrs. Gable snapped in the grand corridor. "The master's quarters need dusting. And when you're done, take the scraps up to the east wing. Feed the old man and make it quick."

The old man.

When Nora first arrived, the other maids had warned her about room 4B in the isolated east wing. They called the occupant Old John, describing him as a decrepit, silent relative of the estate's absent owner. According to servants' whispers, he had been completely paralyzed by severe strokes and suffered from advanced dementia, having not spoken a word in five years. Because the estate's owner was rarely present, the staff treated him with open disdain.

The first time Nora pushed open the heavy oak door to room 4B, she stopped. The room was freezing. The fireplace stood empty, and heavy velvet curtains kept the space in permanent darkness. In a rusted wheelchair in the corner sat the old man. On a small table beside him sat his lunch: a bowl of congealed oatmeal and lukewarm water.

Nora didn't see an inconvenience; she saw a human being entirely dependent on people who had stopped caring.

"Hello, sir," she said softly.

She opened the curtains, built a warm fire, and carefully turned his chair toward the winter sunlight. Slighting Mrs. Gable's strict rules, she slipped downstairs to fetch a bowl of hot minestrone soup and garlic bread, feeding him slowly. Over the next three months, caring for him became her sanctuary. She bought him a heated blanket with her meager tips, washed his hair with lavender soap, and shared her quiet hopes for her unborn daughter, Lily.

What Nora did not know, and what the staff had forgotten, was that the silent man in the wheelchair was not merely a forgotten relative. His real name was Giovanni Moretti. Fifteen years earlier, he had been the most feared Mafia Don on the East Coast. A stroke had trapped him inside his body, but his mind remained razor-sharp. He remembered every insult from Mrs. Gable—and every gentle touch from Nora.

Now, as a massive winter blizzard approached, word spread through the kitchen that Giovanni’s son, Lorenzo Moretti—the ruthless, cold new head of the syndicate—was returning home to ride out the storm.

Mrs. Gable panicked, forcing Nora into brutal physical labor to prepare the house. On the morning the storm hit, a convoy of armored black SUVs arrived. Lorenzo entered, dark, dangerous, and commanding. Mrs. Gable bowed obsequiously, lying through her teeth: "We treat your father like an absolute king, Mr. Moretti. The very best care."

Nora stood at the back of the line, her stomach churning at the lie, unaware that the dark empire was about to wake up.
