Chapter 6 - THE TRIAL PREPARATION (1,800 Words)Six weeks passed.

My physical healing moved rapidly. The heavy cast on my right foot was removed, replaced by a lighter, removable walking boot. With intensive physical therapy, I was able to stand and walk short distances without crutches, though a dull ache remained as a permanent reminder of that terrible night.
I had moved out of the hospital and into a secure, gated apartment building in downtown Chicago, arranged by Eleanor and protected by 24-hour private security. Maya lived three doors down the hallway, and David Chen visited twice a week to prepare our testimony for the upcoming criminal trial.
Meanwhile, Julian’s life in county custody was spiraling downward.
Deprived of his tailored suits, his luxury vehicles, and his daily sense of absolute control, his psychological state deteriorated rapidly. His legal team had gone through three different lead attorneys in six weeks, as Julian repeatedly clashed with his lawyers, demanding that they file impossible motions to dismiss the charges.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, David Chen arrived at my apartment with a thick binder of court filings.
"Julian’s defense team has just filed their final witness list and strategy outline," David announced, setting his briefcase on the dining table. "They are attempting a radical shift in defense."
I poured David a cup of green tea. "What are they claiming now?"
"They are dropping the 'theatrical trust-building exercise' argument—it was completely dismantled by the medical evidence," David explained. "Now, they are going with a mental health defense. They intend to argue that Julian suffered a temporary psychotic break brought on by extreme executive stress, sleep deprivation, and severe anxiety over becoming a father."
Maya came in from the kitchen, holding a plate of fruit. "A psychotic break? He had the clarity to record a video, write a coherent caption, post it online, and then try to bribe Clara twenty-four hours later!"
"Exactly," David nodded. "It’s a desperate strategy, and the state’s psychiatric expert has already evaluated Julian in detention. Their report states clearly that while Julian exhibits strong narcissistic personality traits, he was fully aware of the nature and wrongfulness of his actions during the assault."
"What about Brenda?" I asked.
"Brenda’s trial has been severed from Julian’s," David replied. "Her legal team is trying to claim she was merely a passive bystander who was terrified of her son’s outburst. But we have the security footage recovered from the home server showing her actively holding your shoulders and instructing him to hit harder."
I felt a cold shiver pass over my skin, remembering Brenda’s cold, smiling eyes while I screamed. "She was never afraid. She enjoyed every second of it."
"And that video footage will ensure she serves prison time alongside him," David assured me.
As we reviewed my upcoming testimony, my phone chimed with a private email notification. It was from a secondary address I rarely used—one connected to my old personal blog.
I opened the message. It contained no text, only a single attached photo file.
I clicked on the attachment. My breath caught in my throat.
The photo showed a view of my current apartment building from across the street, taken from inside a parked vehicle. Attached to the bottom of the image was a short, typed text snippet: “Resting comfortable while my son sits in a cell? This isn't over, Clara.”
Maya noticed my pale face immediately. "Clara? What is it?"
I handed the phone to David.
David’s eyes darkened instantly as he examined the metadata of the image. "This was taken less than two hours ago. Brenda is violating her restraining order."
"She’s stalking the building," Maya said, her voice rising in alarm.
"She’s unraveling," David corrected calmly, pulling out his phone to dial Detective Vance directly. "Brenda used to hide behind lawyers and money. Now that her money can't save Julian, her arrogance is driving her to make sloppy, emotional mistakes. This email is a direct felony violation of a protective order with intent to intimidate a key witness."
Within twenty minutes, Detective Vance and two patrol officers arrived at my apartment. They secured the email digital file, traced the sending IP address to a prepaid mobile hotspot, and pulled the street surveillance footage from the commercial cameras across from my building.
The camera footage clearly captured Brenda’s silver Mercedes parked across the street at 9:15 AM, with Brenda herself visible in the driver’s seat holding a smartphone toward my balcony.
"She just revoked her own bail," Detective Vance declared, shutting his laptop. "An arrest warrant for felony stalking and violation of a protective order is being issued right now."
By 3:00 PM that same afternoon, Brenda Reed was arrested for the second time—this time at her Lake Forest home, led away in handcuffs in front of local news crews who had been tipped off by neighborhood onlookers.
When the judge convened an emergency bail revocation hearing at 5:00 PM, Brenda’s legal team stood helpless. The judge permanently revoked her bail, ordering that Brenda Reed be held in custody without bond alongside her son until the conclusion of their trials.

That night, as I sat on my balcony watching the city lights of Chicago, the rain finally cleared, revealing a brilliant sky of clear stars.
For months, I had lived in fear of what Julian and Brenda would do next. But every time they tried to lash out, their own venom turned back on them. They were digging their own graves, one arrogant act at a time.
