Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest“Naomi, I am warning you—turn around and get off my property right now before I have security throw you out into the street,” Brandon snarled, his fingers curling into tight fists at his sides.

Before I could answer, the sharp click of heels on stone echoed across the patio.

Eleanor Blackwood glided toward us, her face carved from the same cold, unyielding marble as her son’s. She adjusted her diamond necklace, looking down her nose at my mother with open, venomous disgust.

“Well, well,” Eleanor drawled, her voice dripping with condescension. “The little charity case and her unrefined handler have decided to crash a private family gathering. How utterly predictable. Did you come here to beg for your engagement ring back, my dear? Because I assure you, it’s already in the liquidation bin.”

Mom flinched slightly at the insult, but before she could speak, I stepped directly in front of her, shielding her with my shoulder.

“I didn't come here for a ring, Eleanor,” I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the surrounding guests who had stopped eating to watch the drama unfold. “And I certainly didn't come to beg. I came to return something your family lost twenty-eight years ago.”

Eleanor’s perfectly composed expression twitched. A micro-expression of raw, instantaneous panic flashed across her eyes before she masked it with a haughty sneer.

“What on earth are you blathering about?” Eleanor snapped.

I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the small USB flash drive, and held it up between my thumb and forefinger for everyone on the patio to see.

“This little drive contains a complete digital archive,” I announced, raising my voice just enough to carry across the quiet pool deck. “It contains the closed-file adoption records from St. Jude’s Hospital in Sacramento. It contains the birth certificate naming Eleanor Blackwood as the biological mother of a child born out of wedlock twenty-eight years ago. And, most importantly, it contains the legal trust indenture proving that my grandmother’s eight-million-dollar estate was deliberately established for that specific child—not as a charitable gift, but as hush money.”

A collective gasp echoed across the patio. Several guests dropped their forks.

Brandon lunged forward, his face purple with absolute fury, his hand shooting out to grab my wrist. “Give me that!”

Before his fingers could close around my arm, a heavy, muscular hand clamped onto Brandon’s shoulder from behind, spinning him around with enough force to send him stumbling backward into a patio chair.

“I wouldn't touch her if I were you, Brandon,” a deep, steady voice growled.

We all turned. Waylon stepped out from behind the shadow of the French doors, wearing a sharp dark suit, his expression like granite. He held up his own smartphone, screen flashing with an active audio-recording interface.

“Waylon? You traitorous bastard!” Brandon screamed, scrambling up from the chair. “What are you doing here?!”

“I’m doing what our family should have done twenty-eight years ago, Brandon,” Waylon replied, stepping up beside me and offering a supportive nod to my mother. “I’m stopping a crime.”

Eleanor’s face was now completely drained of color. She looked at Waylon, then at me, and finally at the dozen high-society friends and local business partners staring at her in stunned silence.

“This is a malicious, fabricated extortion attempt!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Security! Get these lunatics off my property!”

“Don't bother calling security, Eleanor,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the front entryway of the mansion.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

Stepping out through the double doors, flanked by two uniformed county sheriff deputies and a gray-haired man carrying a heavy leather briefcase, was Officer Miller of the Hillsborough Police Department.

“Mrs. Eleanor Blackwood,” the officer stated clearly, holding up an official document. “You are being placed under formal investigation for probate fraud, falsification of vital records, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny. And Mr. Brandon Blackwood... you’re coming with us too.”
