Chapter 4 - The Court of Wolves

The Grand Conclave of the Syndicate was held beneath the vaulted ceilings of an abandoned cathedral in Cicero, a place where sacred iconography had long since been stripped away to make room for mahogany tables and armed men in tailored overcoats.

I wasn't supposed to be there. But Luca had insisted.

"Isabella stays within my sightline or Marco's," Luca had told me earlier that afternoon as we prepared. "And since you are Isabella’s voice when I am handling the table, you sit behind me. No one touches my family. That includes you now."

The word *family* had echoed in my chest for hours.

Isabella sat between Marco and me in a private, bulletproof viewing alcove high above the cathedral floor, looking through a one-way mirror. She was occupied with her sketchpad, drawing intricate charcoal portraits of the gargoyles carved into the stone pillars. She had headphones on—not to block sound, but because they played heavy bass frequencies that vibrated through her skull, a sensation she loved while focusing on her art.

Below us, thirty men sat around a massive oval table. At one end sat Antonio Bellini, an older man with slicked-back silver hair, cold gray eyes, and a face lined with bitter ambition. Beside him sat Vanessa, looking pale but venomous in a high-necked black velvet dress, acting the part of the humiliated maiden.

At the other end sat Luca. He looked like an emperor among warlords. He wore a midnight-blue suit, his silver pocket watch chain catching the dim light, his hands resting flat upon the table. He was entirely alone at his side of the table; he didn't need a phalanx of bodyguards to project absolute menace.

An elderly don from Detroit, acting as the neutral arbitrator, struck the table with a heavy gavel. "We are convened to hear the grievance of Don Antonio Bellini against Don Luca Moretti. A contract of union was broken without prior council. Don Antonio, speak."

Antonio stood, resting his palms on the wood. "My daughter was brought into Don Luca’s home under the sacred promise of marriage. Two nights ago, at their public celebration, Luca threw her into the street like a common whore. He humiliated our bloodline in front of our associates. He claims she was unkind to his daughter. Unkind! Since when do we break syndicate alliances over the whims of an afflicted child?"

*Afflicted child.*

Up in the alcove, I gripped the armrest so hard my knuckles popped. Isabella didn't look up, thankfully lost in her art, but my heart burned with fury.

Down below, Luca didn't shout. He didn't flinch. He slowly leaned back in his leather chair, crossing one long leg over the other.

"Afflicted?" Luca’s voice was smooth, carrying effortlessly through the vaulted hall. "My daughter has a sharper mind than half the capos sitting at this table, Antonio. But this wasn't about kindness. This was about treason."

Vanessa spoke up, her voice trembling in practiced theatrical sorrow. "Luca, how can you lie like this? I tried to give that poor girl discipline! She wouldn't look at me, she wouldn't speak, she waved her hands around like a lunatic to draw attention from our guests! I was trying to prepare her for society!"

Luca didn't even look at her. He simply raised two fingers.

Marco, standing just outside our alcove door, signaled the projection unit. Above the altar, a massive digital display flickered to life.

The documents we had combed through the previous night were projected in high-resolution clarity. First, the four-million-dollar wire transfers from the Bellini accounts into offshore Swiss holdings. Second, the signed commitment papers for the St. Moritz asylum, bearing Vanessa Bellini’s signature alongside a forged medical power of attorney.

And finally, an audio recording began to play through the cathedral’s sound system.

It was Vanessa’s voice, captured via the O’Hare hangar wiretap: *“The brat is handled. Once the wedding is finalized, the papers go through. Luca will be so busy managing the Chicago port strikes that by the time he realizes she's across the Atlantic, Isabella will be classified as legally non-verbal and incompetent. He’ll sign over the southern docks just to get visiting rights.”*

The silence in the cathedral was absolute.

Antonio Bellini’s face drained of color until he looked like a corpse. Around the table, the other Dons—men who lived by ancient, brutal codes regarding blood and family—began to shift uncomfortably. In the mafia, violence was business; but stealing another Don's child and committing them to an institution for extortion was considered an abomination.

"You dare," Luca whispered, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table, "bring your viper into my house to cage my child?"

"Luca..." Antonio stammered, raising his hands. "I... I had no knowledge of this! This was Vanessa acting on her own! She was desperate for the southern territory—"

"Quiet, old man," Luca commanded. The weight in his tone forced Antonio back into his chair.

Luca rose to his feet. He was a mountain of quiet fury. "The contract is dead. The Bellini family has thirty days to liquidate all assets in Illinois and relocate south of the Ohio River. Any Bellini soldier seen north of Springfield after that date will be hunted like vermin."

Vanessa stood up, her composure completely shattered. "You can't do this! We have allies! The Tarasovs will never let you take the lakefront docks!"

Luca finally looked at her, his dark eyes colder than a winter grave.

"The Tarasovs," Luca said calmly, "sold me your flight logs for two million dollars this morning. You have no allies, Vanessa. You only have a head start."

He turned on his heel and walked away from the table, not waiting for the arbitrator’s gavel.

Up in the alcove, Isabella felt the heavy vibrations of the gavel striking the wood below. She looked up from her sketchbook, her large brown eyes blinking behind her curls. She looked at me, tilting her head.

*Is Daddy done working?* she signed.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for days. I reached out and gently smoothed a stray curl from her forehead.

May you like

*Yes, sweetheart,* I signed back, my heart swelling with fierce pride. *Daddy is done working. Let's go home.*
