Chapter 4 - The Subpoena Storm (1,800 Words)By Monday morning, the legal net tightened around Vanessa with terrifying speed.

Daniel had filed an emergency motion for a freezing order on all assets held by Alpine Luxe Escapes LLC and Vanessa’s personal bank accounts. The Summit County District Court granted the order within two hours, recognizing the clear risk of asset dissipation given Marcus Vance’s forensic findings regarding the BMW X5 purchase.
I stayed at the cabin in Breckenridge, refusing to leave. I wanted to reclaim my space, scrub away every trace of the commercial invasion, and restore the sanctuary Michael and I had built.
I spent Sunday afternoon carefully cleaning every room. I vacuumed the carpets, scrubbed the kitchen counters where strange caterers had prepped food, and retrieved Michael’s wedding photograph from the dusty utility closet where Vanessa had shoved it. I polished the glass frame with a soft cloth and placed it back in its rightful place dead center on the stone mantelpiece.
As I lit a cedarwood candle and watched the flame flicker against the stone, I felt a deep, profound sense of peace returning to the lodge. This was our home. Not a hotel. Not a business. A sanctuary born of love and loss.
At 10:00 AM on Monday, my phone rang. It was Daniel.
"Rebecca, you won't believe what just happened at the courthouse," Daniel said, his voice laced with suppressed amusement. "Vanessa tried to file an emergency countersuit to lift our asset freeze, claiming the business was a 'joint family venture' and that you verbally agreed to let her use the property during Thanksgiving dinner last year."
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. "A verbal agreement? At Thanksgiving dinner? When we were eating turkey and discussing architectural zoning laws?"
"Exactly. Her lawyer looked like he wanted to crawl under the table and die," Daniel chuckled. "When Judge Harrison asked Vanessa’s attorney if they had any written proof, text messages, or signed addendums backing up this alleged verbal agreement, Vanessa stood up in open court and started screaming that you were a heartless psychopath who hoarded wealth while starving your family."
"How did Judge Harrison respond?"
"He held her in contempt of court, slapped her with a thousand-dollar fine on the spot, and gave her lawyers twenty-four hours to produce legitimate financial documentation proving where every single dollar of the client deposits went—or face immediate criminal indictment for grand larceny."
"Good," I said coldly. "Let her feel the pressure."
"There's more," Daniel added, his tone turning serious. "We found something else in the corporate filings. Vanessa didn't just use your property address. She also listed your personal social security number as the corporate guarantor on her commercial insurance policy without your knowledge or consent."
My breath hitched. "Identity theft."
"Textbook identity theft," Daniel confirmed. "She committed a federal-level offense. We now have enough leverage to force her into a complete, unconditional surrender of her LLC, full restitution of every penny she stole, and a permanent restraining order keeping her at least five hundred miles away from you and this property."

"I want her to sign over the LLC and every single asset she acquired with those stolen funds—including that new BMW," I said, my voice unyielding. "If she agrees by tomorrow morning, we hold off on filing the federal identity theft charges with the FBI. If she refuses, let the federal prosecutors have her."
"Consider it done," Daniel said. "I'll have our investigator serve her with the ultimatum within the hour."
