Chapter 4 - Uncovering the Financial WebFor the next six hours, while Noah studied quietly in his room, I systematically combed through every transaction, wire transfer, and credit line connected to our names.

What I found made my blood run cold.

The $45,000 transfer was just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past eighteen months, small, recurring transfers of $1,500 to $3,000 had been quietly leaving Ethan’s personal account—funded by smaller top-ups from our joint operating account—and heading to an unknown shell company listed as "D&E Management LLC."

I ran a quick business search on the Illinois Secretary of State portal.

"D&E Management LLC" was registered to Diane Vance and Ethan Vance.

They hadn't just been dreaming about buying a suburban home. They had already put down a earnest money deposit on a pre-construction property three months ago. Diane’s claims of being "broke" and unable to afford a simple apartment were an absolute lie. She and Ethan had been funneling our combined household surplus—money I earned—into a corporate entity designed to build an asset entirely in their names.

I printed every single bank statement, highlighted every suspicious transaction in bright yellow, and compiled a detailed chronological ledger of the funds transferred from my personal salary contributions into their LLC.

At 4:00 PM, my phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered. “Claire speaking.”

“Claire, hello. This is Marcus Vance,” a quiet, deep voice said.

It was Ethan’s older half-brother, Marcus. Marcus was the black sheep of the Vance family. Ten years ago, he had cut off contact with Diane after a bitter falling out over his father's estate. He had always kept his distance from Ethan, viewing him as Diane's puppet. I had only met Marcus twice at family events, where he had been polite but distant.

“Marcus?” I said, surprised. “How did you get my number?”

“I still have your contact from your wedding,” Marcus said calmly. “Listen, Claire. Ethan called me an hour ago. He was bragging about how he 'handled' you, how he took control of the finances, and how you were going to be forced to sell the townhouse to satisfy his mother's demands. He asked if he could borrow my trailer to start moving furniture out of your place next week.”

My stomach tightened. “He really thinks he can just strip my home?”

“He thinks he can because Diane has been feeding him line after line about how wives always back down when financial pressure is applied,” Marcus said. “Claire, I know we don't know each other well, but I know my mother. She destroyed my father financially during their divorce, and she’s doing the exact same thing to you using Ethan as her instrument. You need to hit them hard, and you need to do it fast.”

“I’m building a paper trail right now,” I told him, looking at the mountain of printed balance sheets on my desk. “He took $45,000 today, but I just found out they’ve been funneling money into an LLC for over a year.”

Marcus took a slow breath. “If they registered an LLC, check the tax filings and property records in DuPage County. That’s where Diane always wanted to buy. And Claire... hire the best forensic divorce lawyer in Chicago. I’m going to send you my father’s old attorney's contact information. Her name is Eleanor Vance—no relation, iron clad reputation.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, genuine gratitude warming my chest. “Why are you helping me?”

“Because,” Marcus replied, his voice hardening, “ten years ago, nobody helped me when Diane lied and took everything. It’s time somebody put an end to her games.”
