Chapter 6 - The New HeadquartersBy late spring, my administrative reassignment to the Midwest regional command was fully established, and we settled into a brand-new chapter of our lives.

We didn't buy a sterile suburban box with manicured lawns and gossiping neighbors. Instead, I purchased a quiet, sturdy brick home situated on a sprawling five-acre lot just outside Columbus, surrounded by towering oak trees, a sprawling garden, and a wide back porch where Maya could sit for hours sketching without anyone watching her or timing her movements.

The military logistics command center was located just twenty minutes away at the base, allowing me to fulfill my duties as a Major General while still being home in time to cook dinner with my daughter every single evening.

For Maya, the transformation was nothing short of miraculous. She enrolled in a progressive local arts high school, where her natural talent for drawing and design was nurtured rather than suppressed. She made friends who loved her quirky humor, joined the school’s art club, and started laughing out loud again—a sound that used to be a rarity in Richard’s silent, oppressive house.

One Friday evening, as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet, we were sitting on the back porch eating homemade pizza.

Maya paused, holding a slice in her hand, and looked across the wooden table at me.

“Mom?”

“Mmm?” I hummed, taking a sip of iced tea.

“Are you ever going to go back to Washington? Or overseas?” she asked, a faint shadow of insecurity crossing her dark eyes. “I know… I know you gave up a really big command position for me.”

I set my glass down, leaned across the table, and took her hands in mine.

“Maya, listen to me,” I said, looking straight into her eyes with the fierce, unshakeable devotion of a mother who had crossed battlefields to protect her child. “There is no mission in the United States military, no strategic command, and no deployment in the world that is more important to me than you are. I didn't give up anything. I finally took my proper post.”

A radiant, beautiful smile broke across Maya’s face. She leaned forward and wrapped her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder.

“You’re the best general in the world, Mom,” she whispered.

“And you’re the best soldier in my command,” I replied, kissing her cheek.
