Chapter 1 - The Nine Eleven CallThe three digits clicked under my thumb with terrifying clarity: 9 - 1 - 1.

Garrett’s victory smile vanished so quickly it looked like he had been struck across the face. Vivian’s wineglass froze halfway to her lips, her manicured fingers tightening around the crystal stem until her knuckles turned white.
"911, what is your emergency?" the operator’s calm, crisp voice echoed loudly through the silent dining room of L’Étoile. I had placed the phone on speaker and set it flat on the white tablecloth right next to the eight-thousand-four-hundred-dollar bill.
"Hello," I said, my voice steady, clear, and completely devoid of emotion as I wiped a stray drop of Cabernet from my neck. "My name is Claire Vance. I am currently inside the private dining room at L’Étoile on 55th Street. I have just been physically assaulted in public, and I am currently being subjected to extortion and financial coercion by my husband, Garrett Vance, and his mother, Vivian Vance."
"Claire! Are you out of your mind?!" Garrett roared, lunging across the table to grab my phone.
"Sir, step back immediately!" I barked into the phone, backing away from the table as two large restaurant security guards—who had been watching the scene unfold from the kitchen doors—rushed into the room.
"Ma'am, stay where you are," the 911 operator instructed. "Officers are three blocks away and en route to your location. Do not engage with the suspect."
Garrett reached for the phone, but the head security guard, a burly former NYPD officer named Marcus, stepped directly between Garrett and my chair, placing a heavy, gloved hand against Garrett’s chest.
"Touch her again, sir, and I’ll put you on the floor before the police even arrive," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register.
"Do you know who I am?!" Vivian shrieked, standing up so fast her pearl necklace bounced against her velvet dress. "My family has held a private table at this restaurant for ten years! My son did not assault anyone! She spilled her own drink to make a scene because she’s emotionally unstable!"
I looked at Vivian, then at the restaurant manager, Monsieur Dupont, who had just entered the private dining suite with a pale, sweat-streaked face.
"Monsieur Dupont," I said, pointing directly to the glass dome camera mounted on the gilded ceiling right above our table. "Does your security system record audio and high-definition video of the private booths?"
Dupont swallowed hard, looking at Garrett, then at me. "Yes, Mrs. Vance. Every private room is recorded continuously for high-net-worth client security."
"Excellent," I said as the distant sound of police sirens began to wail down 55th Street, growing louder with every passing second. "Because three weeks ago, I filed a formal notice with the Manhattan District Attorney's office regarding systematic grand larceny and forgery committed by my husband using my private inheritance accounts. Tonight’s assault was captured on 4K digital tape, alongside his explicit verbal threat of extortion."
Garrett’s jaw loosened. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly under the chandelier lights. "Claire... what... what are you talking about? What inheritance accounts?"
"The ones you and your mother thought you secretly siphoned six hundred thousand dollars from over the last eighteen months," I replied, pulling my leather handbag over my shoulder.
"You're lying!" Vivian screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering into ugly, panicked shrieks. "Garrett, tell her she’s lying! Tell these people!"
Garrett didn't answer. His eyes darted frantically toward the double doors of the restaurant as four uniformed NYPD officers burst into the room, their badges gleaming under the lights, weapons resting casually on their belts.
"Who called 911?" the lead officer asked, taking in the room—the red wine dripping from my hair, the broken glass on the floor, and Garrett standing over the table with trembling hands.
"I did, Officer," I said, stepping forward. "My name is Claire Vance. And I’d like to press formal charges against Garrett Vance for third-degree assault, attempted extortion, and grand larceny."
The lead officer looked at Garrett, then at the security guard. "Sir, step away from the table and keep your hands where I can see them."
May you like
"This is a mistake!" Garrett stammered, stepping backward. "It was a family argument! She's my wife!"
"I was your wife, Garrett," I said, looking him dead in the eye as the steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. "As of tonight, you are just my primary defendant."
