Chapter 5 - The UltimatumThe front door clicked shut as Arthur escorted Evelyn and the children down to the driveway, leaving only the three of us standing in the wreckage of the dining room. The roasted chicken had gone cold on the table; the candles flickered out in the draft.

Claire was huddled in her chair, shaking violently, wiping mascara from her cheeks with a crumpled napkin. Ryan sat hunched over, staring at his shoes, looking like a deflated balloon.

“You both thought you were so clever,” I said, breaking the silence as I walked slowly around the table, trailing my fingertips lightly over the polished wood. “You thought because I was pregnant, because I was busy managing four kids and a household, that I was completely blind.”

“Maya, I’m sorry,” Claire choked out, looking up with red, swollen eyes. “It just… it started as a joke, and then we got carried away, and—”

“A joke?” I stopped walking and turned to face her, my voice turning to ice. “You think sleeping with your sister’s husband while she carries his child is a joke, Claire? You don't get to use the word 'accident' or 'mistake' here. You systematically invaded my life, took my husband, and laughed behind my back while I fed you dinner at this very table.”

“Maya, don’t blame her, it was my fault—” Ryan started to interject, lifting his head.

“Shut up, Ryan,” I snapped, my gaze whipping toward him with enough venom to make him shrink back. “You don't get to defend her. You don't get to speak at all right now.”

I reached into the pocket of my dress and pulled out my phone, unlocking the screen and tapping a single button. I placed the phone flat on the center of the table, right next to the cold chicken.

“What is that?” Ryan asked warily, eyeing the device.

“That is a complete log of every hotel charge, every phone call timestamp, every text message export, and every recorded statement you two thought you deleted,” I said calmly. “I sent a copy to Arthur this morning before he arrived. And I sent another copy to my divorce attorney.”

Ryan’s face lost every trace of color. “Divorce? Maya, you can’t be serious. We have five kids! We can work through this—”

“We are not working through anything, Ryan,” I interrupted, my voice absolute. “Our marriage ended the second I heard you call me an idiot and promise another woman a hotel room. You wanted out of this life? Consider yourself free.”

“You can’t do this to me,” Claire whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. “If you divorce him, if everyone finds out… my job, my friends, my whole life here is over!”

“Your life here should be over, Claire,” I said coldly. “You packed your bags the moment you decided to tear my family apart. You have forty-eight hours to clear your things out of the guest house. If I ever see you near my children again, I will make sure every client, every friend, and every member of our family knows exactly what kind of person you really are.”

Ryan stood up, desperation making him reckless. “Maya, you can’t kick me out of my own house! The deed is in both our names! I have rights!”

“Oh, you have rights, Ryan?” I smiled, a dark, dangerous expression that made him take a step back. “You have the right to remain silent while my lawyer strips away every asset, every penny of equity, and every ounce of custody you think you’re entitled to. Because in the state of New York, adultery—especially with a close relative living under the auspices of family trust—carries a heavy penalty in family court.”

He stared at me, truly seeing me for the first time in thirteen years. He had underestimated me at every turn. He thought I was slow, docile, and dependent. He didn't realize that a mother protecting her children and her dignity is the most dangerous force on earth.

“Pack your bags, Ryan,” I said, turning my back on them both and walking toward the stairs. “I’m going upstairs to pack for the kids. When I come back down, I expect this house to be empty of you both.”
