Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Marble

For three weeks leading up to the preliminary hearing, Maya and Clara conducted their own covert investigation. While Clara spent her mornings scrubbing floors at an industrial laundry facility to pay for groceries, Maya spent her nights digging through public records, corporate filings, and probate court archives.

What Maya uncovered shocked them both.

Two years prior, Margaret Hamilton had made a series of massive, unsanctioned investments in an offshore real estate venture in Dubai. The venture had collapsed into total bankruptcy—a Ponzi scheme that had swallowed nearly twenty-two million dollars. Because the core Hamilton fortune was tied up in an irrevocable trust controlled solely by Adam, Margaret had been quietly taking out high-interest loans from private, predatory creditors to hide her catastrophic losses from her son.

"Look at this," Maya pointed to a court ledger on her desk. "Last month, a private collection firm out of New Jersey filed an intent-to-sue against Margaret personally. They gave her thirty days to produce four million dollars or they would begin seizing her personal assets and notifying the trust board."

Clara stared at the documents, her hand over her mouth. "The Empress Sapphire was appraised at five million dollars three years ago."

"Exactly," Maya said grimly. "If the necklace was genuinely stolen, the family heirloom policy pays out ninety percent of its insured appraisal directly to the head of household or whoever holds the rider—which happens to be Margaret. She wasn't just getting rid of you because she disliked you, Clara. She needed a scapegoat to make the theft look completely real to the insurance investigators."

"She ruined my life to cover her gambling debts," Clara whispered, a cold fire igniting in her chest where only fear had lived before.

"Yes," Maya said. "Now we just need the proof that will stand up in a courtroom. We need to find where that necklace actually went."

That evening, Clara walked past the high iron gates of the Hamilton estate, staying in the shadows of the autumn trees. Lights blazed in the upstairs nursery. She could see Idan’s silhouette in the window, sitting slumped on the wide window seat. Her heart ached with an intensity that brought fresh tears to her eyes.

Suddenly, a black luxury sedan glided out of the gate, its headlights sweeping across the sidewalk. Clara pulled her hood low and stepped behind an oak tree.

The car paused near the intersection. Through the tinted window, lowered just an inch as the driver checked for traffic, Clara heard Margaret’s unmistakable, commanding tone on the speakerphone:

"...I don't care about Vance’s legal fees! Tell him to push the trial date up. The District Attorney promised me this girl would be locked away before the first snow. I want this file closed, Marcus. If that sapphire isn't cleared by the adjusters by the fifteenth, we are all ruined!"

The sedan accelerated away, vanishing into the night.

Clara stood in the chill air, her spine stiffening. Margaret wasn't confident. She was terrified.
