Chapter 8 - The Interruption

By the third day of the trial, the courtroom was a powder keg. Vance had recalled character witnesses to repair Margaret’s image, but the jury was now visibly skeptical. Yet, Maya still had a massive problem: circumstantial doubt was not enough. Without direct proof of what happened to the necklace, the jury could still convict Clara simply because she had had access to the room.
"We need the necklace," Maya whispered to Clara as the defense prepared to call its final witness. "Without physical proof that she moved it, the jury might hang, or worse, split the difference and convict on a lesser charge."
Judge Harrison checked his watch. "Ms. Lin, call your next witness, or the defense must rest."
Maya took a deep breath. She looked at Clara. They had run out of moves. "Your Honor, the defense—"
*BANG!*
The heavy double oak doors at the back of the courtroom burst open, striking the marble walls with a sound like a rifle shot.
Every head in the room whipped around.
Standing in the center aisle, breathing heavily, was little Idan Hamilton. His hair was disheveled, his school blazer crooked, and his knees scuffed. Standing behind him, blocking two terrified court bailiffs who tried to intercept the boy, was Marcus, the old driver.
"Idan?" Adam Hamilton stood up from the gallery, his voice shaking. "What are you doing here?"
"Your Honor! Control this courtroom!" Arthur Vance shouted, waving his arms in fury. "Remove this child immediately!"
"Stop!" Idan yelled at the top of his small lungs. His high-pitched voice sliced through the tension of the massive room. He pointed his finger straight at the prosecution table, directly at Margaret Hamilton.
"Grandma is a liar!" Idan screamed, tears streaming down his face as he marched down the center aisle. "Clara didn't take it! Clara is good!"
"Bailiff, hold on," Judge Harrison said, raising his hand to silence the guards. The judge leaned forward over his high bench, his gaze fixing on the little boy. "Young man, you cannot disrupt this court."
"I have the proof!" Idan cried out.
From beneath his school jacket, Idan pulled out a bright blue, plastic handheld gaming console—a child’s tablet wrapped in a thick rubber case. He held it above his head like a trophy.
"She hid it in the wine cellar! I recorded her!"
The entire courtroom erupted into pandemonium. Reporters leapt to their feet, scribbling furiously. Margaret lunged forward from her seat, her face twisted in a mask of pure hysteria. "Adam! Grab him! Shut that boy up! He’s hysterical!"

"Sit down, Mrs. Hamilton!" Judge Harrison’s gavel hammered three times with deafening force. "Sit down, or I will have you removed in contempt! Bailiff, bring that child and his father to the bench right now!"
