Chapter 6 - The Town AwakensBy evening, the atmosphere in the town square had completely transformed. The lingering cloud of fear that had suffocated Main Street for a decade had lifted, replaced by an electric buzz of disbelief, vindication, and cautious hope.

My mother and I walked down the brick-paved sidewalk toward the old diner on the corner. People who used to cross the street to avoid being seen talking to our family were now stepping out of shops, nodding respectfully, and offering quiet words of gratitude.

Mrs. Gable, who ran the bakery and had been fined out of business by Michael two years prior for putting her display sign an inch too far over the sidewalk, burst through her shop doors with a tray of fresh pastries.

“General Mitchell!” she called out, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks as she hurried over. “Is it... is it really true? Is he gone?”

I stopped, smiling warmly as I took her trembling hands in mine. “He’s gone, Mrs. Gable. And the federal receivership team is already reviewing all municipal fines issued over the last ten years. Every cent he extorted from you and the other shop owners is going to be refunded.”

She let out a sob of pure relief, pulling me into a fierce hug. “God bless you, Ethan. We thought nobody would ever listen to us. We were trapped.”

“You’re not trapped anymore,” I told her gently.

As we continued down the street, local business owners stepped out of their stores, shaking my hand and thanking my mother for raising a son who didn't forget where he came from. Tyler’s arrogant friends had all deleted their social media accounts, realizing that their association with the disgraced Harris family was now toxic poison in the county.

We sat down at a corner booth in the diner, the same booth where my father used to bring me for pancakes after little league games. The waitress, a young woman whose brother had been wrongfully imprisoned by Michael’s fabricated drug charges, smiled brightly as she poured two cups of coffee.

“On the house, General,” she whispered, her eyes shining with tears of joy. “And... thank you.”
