Chapter 3 - The Badge FallsThe kitchen felt suddenly claustrophobic, packed with half a dozen heavily armed federal operatives whose tactical vests bore no ordinary insignia. They moved with an eerie, mechanical grace, securing every exit and corner of the house.

Michael was still pressed against the counter, his hands shaking in the air. The realization that his entire tiny universe—his badge, his authority, his immunity—had just been vaporized in thirty seconds was visibly breaking his mind.

“You can’t do this,” Michael whispered, his voice cracking. “I run this town. Every judge, every council member, every business owner answers to me. You can’t just kick my door down!”

“Chief Harris,” I said, stepping past Captain Vance as I rolled my shoulder to work out the stiffness. “You spent ten years treating this county like your personal fiefdom. You shook down local business owners, buried internal affairs reports, and thought your uniform made you untouchable.”

“You’re nobody!” Tyler shouted from the corner, his courage returning now that he thought words could protect him. “You were just a burnout kid who washed out of college! You bought that fake uniform online! Dad, arrest him!”

I turned my gaze slowly toward Tyler. The phone he had been using to record was lying face-down in a puddle of spilled coffee.

“Tyler,” I said softly. “You still think this is a local dispute, don’t you? You think because the local sheriff looks the other way when you run your illegal vehicle-flipping racket out of the municipal yard, the rest of the world works the same way.”

“Shut up!” Tyler lunged forward, but a tactical operative stepped into his path like a brick wall, merely shifting his carbine barrel an inch. Tyler froze, swallowing hard.

Captain Vance tapped a small digital pad on his wrist. “General, the satellite uplink is secure. The Joint Chiefs are on standby. Shall we proceed with the asset freeze and jurisdictional takeover?”

“Proceed, Captain,” I replied. “And compile every infraction Chief Harris committed over the last decade. Let’s start with the federal highway funds that mysteriously vanished into the county road commission account.”

Michael’s knees buckled slightly. He grabbed the edge of the counter to keep from falling. “You... you audited us?”

“Long before I walked back into this kitchen, Michael,” I said, walking over to my mother and gently placing a hand on her shoulder to reassure her. “You thought you were a king in a kingdom of mice. But you forgot that mice don't have jurisdiction over the eagle.”

Outside, the wail of approaching state police sirens finally echoed down the street—not to help Michael, but to secure the perimeter for the federal marshals who were already pulling up behind the black SUVs.
