Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family Summit at Maplewood Drive (Approx. 1800 words)By Saturday evening, the fallout on Maplewood Drive had reached biblical proportions.

While I was enjoying a quiet dinner with Noah and Mason at an upscale bistro downtown, Daniel’s parents had summoned an emergency family summit at the house. According to Erin—who had secretly reached out to me via text to ensure she wasn't cut out of my future will—the living room looked like a war tribunal.
Linda sat propped up with three pillows on the living room sofa, still looking pale from her hospital scare, while Richard paced back and forth with a legal notepad clutched in his hand. Daniel sat in the armchair, unshaven, wearing the same wrinkled shirt he had worn on Thursday morning when he casually dropped the bomb over the roasting pan.
“Explain it to us again, Daniel,” Richard demanded, slamming the legal pad onto the coffee table. “Slowly. Because for forty-eight hours you’ve been mumbling about corporate stress and midlife clarity, and none of it explains why forty thousand dollars of your mother-in-law’s inheritance is currently sitting in a BMW dealership under some girl named Chloe’s signature!”
Daniel flinched, burying his face in his hands. “It was an investment! She needed reliable transport for her regional accounts—”
“An investment?!” Linda shrieked, clutching her chest dramatically. “You bought a sports car for your mistress with family money while our house smells like a chemical fire and your wife of twenty years is staying at a luxury hotel refusing to speak to us? Have you lost your absolute mind?!”
“Chloe left me, Dad,” Daniel muttered through his fingers, his voice cracking with miserable defeat. “Yesterday afternoon, when the police showed up because the neighbors smelled burning plastic, she packed her bags, blocked my number, and told me she wasn't interested in being part of a ‘dysfunctional soap opera.’ She’s gone.”
Erin let out a sharp, unapologetic snort from the corner of the room. “Well, color me shocked. The twenty-something corporate climber doesn't want to play stepmom to a broke, middle-aged man whose entire family hates him. Who could have possibly seen that coming?”
“Shut up, Erin!” Daniel roared, leaping to his feet. “You’ve been mocking me since Thursday! Nobody is on my side!”
“Because you acted like an absolute moron, Daniel!” Richard yelled back, his face turning bright crimson. “You had a good life! A wife who cooked Thanksgiving dinner for nine people without a single complaint, a house that was paid off halfway, and sons who actually respected you! And you traded it all for a girl who doesn't even know how to turn on a convection oven!”
The irony of that statement hung heavily in the air.
Just then, the front doorbell rang.
Daniel froze. For a brief, pathetic second, a flicker of hope crossed his ruined face. “Maybe… maybe Chloe came back—”
“Go open the door, Daniel,” Linda said coldly, leaning her head back against the pillows with her eyes closed. “And if it’s not her, prepare yourself for whatever else your brilliant planning has wrought.”
Daniel walked slowly down the hallway, pulled open the front door, and stopped dead.
It wasn't Chloe.
It was a court-appointed process server holding a thick manila envelope bearing the formal seal of the Franklin County Domestic Relations Court.
“Daniel Richard Miller?” the server asked flatly.
“Yes…” Daniel whispered.
“You’ve been served. Emergency asset freeze, temporary restraining order regarding marital property, notice of pending divorce proceedings filed by Claire Miller, and a summons for mandatory financial disclosure regarding unauthorized fund transfers.”

The server shoved the envelope into Daniel’s limp hands, turned on his heel, and walked down the driveway without looking back.
Daniel stood in the doorway for a long moment, the manila envelope feeling like lead in his hands. As he walked slowly back into the living room, his face drained of every remaining drop of color, Richard took one look at the envelope and muttered, “Well. Looks like the turkey isn't the only thing that’s thoroughly cooked.”
