Chapter 7 - The Monday Morning Legal Blitz (Approx. 1800 words)Monday morning at 8:30 AM, the conference room on the tenth floor of downtown Columbus’s premier family law firm looked like a command center.

I sat at the head of a sleek glass table, wearing a sharp navy-blue blazer and pearl earrings, sipping a black coffee while Sarah Jenkins laid out three color-coded folders across the polished surface. Noah and Mason were sitting next to me—having insisted on skipping their morning classes to be present for the initial legal filings.
“Alright,” Sarah said, clicking her gold fountain pen. “Here is where we stand. As of 8:00 AM, Judge Holloway signed the emergency freeze on all joint accounts, commercial assets, and retirement portfolios. Furthermore, because Daniel attempted to liquidate forty thousand dollars of your inherited funds without your consent, we’ve filed a motion for immediate financial restitution and sole occupancy of the Maplewood Drive property.”
Noah nodded approvingly. “So he can’t touch a dime of the retirement funds?”
“Not a single cent,” Sarah smiled sharply. “In fact, Daniel’s corporate credit cards—which he’s been using to fund his lifestyle and his travel with Chloe for the past eight months—have been flagged by our forensic accountant. His employer’s ethics compliance board has also been formally notified of corporate resource misuse during business travel.”
I raised my eyebrows. “You notified his company?”
“Oh, absolutely,” Sarah said smoothly. “When a senior regional director uses corporate expense accounts to wine and dine a subordinate for eight months while billing it as client acquisition, Fortune 500 companies take a very dim view of that. I hear HR is scheduling a very unpleasant Monday morning review for him as we speak.”
Right on cue, my phone buzzed on the glass table.
Caller ID: Daniel (Work Mobile).
I looked at Sarah. She nodded with a tight, knowing smile. I pressed speakerphone and placed it in the center of the table.
“Claire?!” Daniel’s voice screamed through the speaker, frantic, breathless, and laced with absolute hysteria. “What did you do?! What the hell did you just do?!”
“Good morning, Daniel,” I said, my voice calm, cool, and effortless.
“My corporate accounts are frozen!” he yelled, background noise suggesting he was standing in the middle of a busy office corridor. “HR just pulled me into a disciplinary hearing because of ‘expense report discrepancies’ involving Chloe, our home accounts are locked so I couldn't even buy lunch, and a process server handed me a stack of lawsuits that makes it look like I’m standing trial for high treason! Have you lost your mind?!”
“No, Daniel,” I replied evenly. “I’ve simply found it. For twenty years, I managed your life, your family’s holidays, your home, and your career support while you built a double life behind my back. Now, you get to experience what happens when you have to manage your own consequences.”
“Claire, please!” His voice cracked, desperation bleeding into every syllable. “We can settle this outside of court! Just call your lawyer off! My parents are calling me every ten minutes, Mom is threatening to write me out of her will, and I’m about to lose my job!”
“Then I suggest you update your resume,” I said softly. “Because the woman you took for granted on Thursday morning is gone, Daniel. And her lawyer is just getting started.”
I reached out and tapped the speaker button, cutting him off mid-sentence.
May you like
Noah let out a low whistle, leaning back in his chair with a grin that looked so much like mine it gave me chills. “Remind me never to get on your bad side, Mom.”
“Just remember to treat your future partners with respect, and you’ll never have to worry about it,” I smiled, standing up and gathering my folders. “Come on, boys. Let’s go find ourselves a nice celebratory brunch. I hear downtown Columbus has some fantastic restaurants that don't require twenty pounds of turkey to make you happy.”
