Chapter 2 - The Mastermind Behind the Mask(Length: ~1800 words)

The phone rang three times before a deep, authoritative voice echoed through the speaker.
"Claire? I thought you were on a flight to Denver."
I kept my eyes locked on Ryan’s pale, sweat-streaked face. "I am, Uncle Arthur. I'm calling from the first-class cabin on Flight 405."
Ryan’s breath hitched in his throat. His knees actually buckled slightly against the seat in front of him.
Arthur Pendelton wasn't just a corporate titan; he was the majority shareholder and Chairman of the Board at Apex Global Logistics—the very firm where Ryan worked as a Senior Vice President. More importantly, Arthur was my late mother's brother, my godfather, and the man who held ninety percent of Ryan's career advancement in the palm of his hand.
"First class?" Arthur asked, a subtle note of confusion in his voice. "Did your executive travel desk upgrade you?"
"No, Uncle Arthur," I said, my voice smooth as silk, carrying clearly across the quiet cabin. "I stepped up here to check on Ryan. He told me this morning he was boarding a flight to Portland for a solo executive retreat. But it turns out he's right here on my flight to Denver. Sitting in Seat 2B."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the line.
Ryan reached out, his hands trembling as he tried to snatch the phone from my grip. "Claire, please! Give me the phone! Let me talk to him! Arthur, sir, there’s been a massive misunderstanding—"
"Quiet, Ryan," I said flatly, stepping back out of his reach.
I turned the phone onto speaker.
"Ryan?" Arthur’s voice dropped into an icy, terrifying register. "Is that you? Why are you on a flight to Denver when your quarterly division report was due to the board at noon?"
Chloe shrank back against the airplane window, pulling her knees up to her chest, her face red with embarrassment as several first-class passengers began turning in their seats to watch the unfolding drama.
"Sir... Mr. Pendelton," Ryan stammered, his forehead glistening with sweat under the cabin lights. "I... I was bringing an assistant to assist with emergency client prep in the regional office—"
"An assistant?" I interrupted smoothly, looking down at my nails. "Uncle Arthur, his assistant is Chloe Vance. She was currently resting her head in Ryan's lap under a blanket while Ryan confirmed to the flight attendant that she was his wife."
"What?!" Arthur roared through the phone speaker, his voice so loud that even the flight attendant standing near the galley gasped. "Ryan Vance, you lying, miserable parasite!"
"Arthur, please!" Ryan begged, his arrogance completely shattered. "Claire is misrepresenting the situation! Chloe was feeling airsick! I was just comforting her as her manager—"
"Shut your mouth!" Arthur commanded, his tone sharp enough to cut glass. "Four years ago, Ryan, when Claire brought you into my firm, I gave you an opportunity because I trusted her judgment. I gave you the Midwest accounts. I put you on the track for Regional Managing Director. And you use my company’s expense account to take your mistress on a weekend getaway while lying to my niece?!"
"It's not a getaway!" Chloe blurted out frantically from the window seat, her voice high and trembling. "We have a business meeting!"
"Miss Vance," Arthur's voice cut through her lie like a butcher's knife. "You are an at-will employee of Apex Global. Effective five seconds ago, your employment with this firm is terminated. Security will clear out your desk before this plane lands."
Chloe let out a horrified gasp, burying her face in her hands as she began to sob hysterically.
Ryan looked like he was going to throw up on the aisle carpet. "Arthur, you can't do this! The Harrison account! I'm leading the closing pitch on Monday! They won't sign without me!"
"The Harrison account belongs to Arthur's firm, Ryan," I reminded him softly, taking a step closer to his seat. "And if you recall, I was the one who introduced you to Marcus Harrison at my mother’s charity gala three years ago."
Ryan stared at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying realization.
For seven years, Ryan had convinced himself that he was a self-made corporate superstar. He had surrounded himself with expensive suits, high-end watches, and a bloated sense of superiority, convincing himself that he had outgrown his "simple" wife. He had forgotten that every major door that had ever opened for him in New York, Chicago, and Denver had been unlocked by my family’s legacy.
"Claire..." Ryan whimpered, dropping to one knee right there in the airplane aisle, his hands clasping together in a desperate plea. "Please. I made a mistake. A horrible, stupid mistake. I was overwhelmed with work... I lost my head. Chloe meant nothing to me! It was just a stupid distraction! I love you! I've always loved you!"
Beside him, Chloe stopped crying and whipped her head around, staring at Ryan in absolute, stunned betrayal. "What?! Ryan, you told me last night you were filing for divorce next week! You told me you didn't love her!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Ryan snapped violently, turning on her with a vicious snarl. "You ruined my life!"
"I ruined your life?!" Chloe shrieked, standing up in her seat, her voice echoing throughout the entire first-class cabin. "You're the one who told me your wife was a miserable, cold bitch who didn't understand your vision! You bought me those diamond earrings with her credit card!"
The entire cabin went dead quiet.
Several passengers gasped. One man in row three pulled out his smartphone and quietly began recording the spectacle.
I looked down at Ryan kneeling on the floorboards, then at Chloe screaming in her silver silk blouse, and felt a profound, beautiful sense of liberation wash over my soul. The humiliation I had carried for months—the self-doubt, the late-night tears, the sickening feeling that I was failing as a wife—vanished into thin air.
"Arthur," I spoke into the phone, my voice steady and iron-clad. "Please have the corporate legal team freeze all joint division accounts tied to Ryan's credentials immediately. I'll be landing in Denver in two hours."
"Consider it done, Claire," Arthur replied, his voice filled with deep, fierce affection. "My private car will be waiting for you at the gate. As for Mr. Vance... his corporate credentials have already been revoked. He can pay for his own flight back."
Arthur hung up the call.
I slid my phone back into my blazer pocket.
Ryan reached up, grabbing the hem of my pants suit, his face pale, tears welling in his eyes. "Claire... please don't leave me. We can fix this. Marriage counseling! We'll go to therapy! I'll fire Chloe myself! I'll do whatever you want!"
I slowly reached down and unclasped his fingers from my fabric, stepping back into the aisle with effortless grace.
May you like
"You already fixed it for me, Ryan," I said softly, offering him one last, pitying look. "You showed me exactly who you are."
I turned on my heel and walked back toward the economy cabin, leaving my husband kneeling in the aisle of first class, flanked by his weeping mistress and thirty staring strangers, as his carefully constructed life crumbled around him at thirty thousand feet.
