Chapter 3 - The Cold Landing(Length: ~1800 words)

The remaining two hours of Flight 405 were the quietest hours of my life.

While I sat in seat 16B, sipping a cup of black coffee and reviewing my presentation notes for the Denver crisis meeting, the atmosphere in the first-class cabin fourteen rows ahead of me was an absolute war zone.

Twice, the lead flight attendant had to step in and instruct Ryan and Chloe to keep their voices down as their toxic shouting match spilled into the aisle. Chloe spent forty-five minutes in the lavatory crying hysterically, while Ryan sat red-faced, frantically trying to connect to the plane’s Wi-Fi to access his corporate emails—only to find his executive access codes blocked, his company credit cards suspended, and his internal messaging accounts terminated.

When the wheels of the Boeing 737 finally touched down on the tarmac at Denver International Airport, I stood up calmly, retrieved my carry-on bag from the overhead bin, and waited for the doors to open.

As I exited the jetway into the bustling terminal, I saw Ryan sprinting past the gate counter, his tie undone, his suit jacket wrinkled, dragging his suitcase behind him like a madman.

“Claire! Stop! Please!” Ryan yelled, dodging past confused travelers.

He caught up to me near the moving walkway, panting heavily, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. Chloe was trailing fifty yards behind him, her eyes swollen, carrying her own bags, looking entirely discarded.

“Claire, hear me out for five minutes!” Ryan pleaded, stepping into my path, his arms raised in a frantic gesture. “We’ve been married for seven years! You can’t just burn my career to the ground over a momentary lapse of judgment!”

“A momentary lapse of judgment?” I repeated smoothly, stopping in the middle of the terminal concourse, my voice perfectly controlled. “Ryan, you’ve been sleeping with your assistant for eight months. You leased an apartment in Brooklyn using company funds under a shell account. You bought her a four-thousand-dollar Cartier bracelet for her birthday while you gave me a gift card to a spa.”

Ryan froze, his jaw dropping in shock. “How... how do you know about the Brooklyn apartment?”

I offered him a tight, satisfied smile. “Did you really think I didn't notice the fifty-thousand-dollar variance in your division’s quarterly travel ledger, Ryan? I am a senior financial auditor. My entire career is built on finding cockroaches hiding in corporate spreadsheets. I knew about Chloe three weeks ago.”

Ryan stared at me as if I were a stranger. “You... you knew?”

“I knew,” I confirmed flatly. “I was simply waiting for you to make a public, irrecoverable mistake. And today, sitting in seat 2B, letting a flight attendant call another woman your wife while texting me 'I love you'... you gave me everything I needed.”

A sleek, uniformed chauffeur wearing a dark suit stepped up beside us, holding a digital sign that read: MRS. CLAIRE VANCE - APEX GLOBAL.

“Mrs. Vance?” the driver asked respectfully, taking my carry-on bag. “Mr. Pendelton’s private transport is ready at the curb.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I nodded warmly.

Ryan lunged forward, trying to grab my hand. “Claire! What about the Harrison account pitch on Monday?! If I’m not there, the board will lose fifty million dollars!”

“The board won't lose anything, Ryan,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “Because Marcus Harrison didn't hire Apex Global because of your pitch. He hired Apex because his wife and I serve on the board of the National Children’s Foundation together. I called Marcus ten minutes before we landed. He has already signed the contract directly with Arthur—on the strict condition that you are removed from the account entirely.”

Ryan stumbled back as if he had been struck by a physical blow. The final pillar of his professional pride—the multi-million-dollar deal he had bragged about for months—had been taken from him effortlessly.

Chloe finally caught up, her designer heels clicking against the tile floor. She grabbed Ryan’s arm, her voice shrill with anger. “Ryan! The hotel reservation in Denver just got canceled! My company card was declined at the counter!”

Ryan violently shoved her hand off his arm. “Get the hell away from me, Chloe! You ruined everything!”

“I ruined it?!” Chloe screamed, slapping his arm violently. “You dragged me into this! You told me your wife was powerless! You promised me a promotion!”

As the two of them devolved into another loud, humiliating public shouting match in the middle of the crowded Denver terminal, attracting the attention of two airport police officers, I turned my back on them.

I walked out the sliding glass doors into the crisp mountain air, slid into the plush leather interior of the waiting luxury sedan, and closed the door.

As the car pulled away from the curb, leaving Ryan and his mistress behind in the dust, my phone chimed in my hand.

It was an email from my personal attorney, Sarah Lin:

Claire, the emergency divorce filing, financial freeze, and eviction notice for the marital home have been submitted to the court. Ryan will be served the moment he returns to Boston. Excellent work today.

I looked out the window at the snow-capped Rockies looming in the distance, felt the cool breeze against my face, and took the first clean, deep breath I had taken in seven years.
