Chapter 3 - The Ashford Grand GalaThe Ashford Grand Hotel was a monument to old-money opulence. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings painted with classical frescoes, casting brilliant golden light over three hundred of the city’s corporate elite. Waiters in white waistcoats glided through the crowd with silver trays of vintage champagne, while a harpist played softly on a raised marble dais near the entrance.

At the center of the main ballroom stood Daniel Hawkins, radiating the unearned arrogance of a man who believed he had conquered the world.

Surrounding him were Metroline’s senior regional directors, laughing at his jokes and patting his back. Standing dangerously close to his right side was Michelle Vance—a tall, striking thirty-year-old blonde dressed in a backless crimson gown that clung to every curve. Michelle was the daughter of Metroline’s Chief Financial Officer, a woman who wore her privilege like armor and viewed everyone beneath her pay grade as mere scenery.

"To Daniel!" Michelle announced, raising her crystal flute with a dazzling, predatory smile. "The newest Senior Vice President of Operations! The youngest in Metroline's history!"

The circle of executives clinked their glasses, chorus-like in their praise. Daniel beamed, his chest swelling as he reached out and casually rested a hand on the small of Michelle’s back—a gesture that went far beyond professional camaraderie.

"You've outdone yourself, Daniel," praised Arthur Vance, Michelle’s father, a thick-set man with silver hair and a sharp, calculating glare. "The expansion proposal you submitted to the board last week was brilliant. If EV Lauron approves the funding line tomorrow morning, your division will be managing fifty million dollars in new assets."

Daniel swelled with pride, taking a deep gulp of his champagne. "EV Lauron won't reject it, Arthur. I've restructured the logistics models personally. The mysterious CEO might be a hermit who hides behind initials, but he knows talent when he sees it."

Laughter rippled through the group.

Then, the heavy double doors at the back of the grand ballroom creaked open.

A few heads turned, but mostly people paid no attention. A woman walked into the hall alone.

Elise wore a plain, navy-blue high-necked dress—elegantly cut, but devoid of shimmering sequins, designer labels, or expensive jewels. She wore no makeup except for a touch of light lip balm, and her hair was gathered in a neat, simple twist at the nape of her neck. In her right hand, clutched tightly inside a small velvet pouch, was the printed sonogram photo from the clinic.

Despite everything—despite the text messages, the cold shoulder, the creeping certainty of his betrayal—a fragile, naive part of her heart had wanted to give him one last chance. She wanted him to look at her, see his child's heartbeat, and choose his family over his ambition.

She walked slowly through the crowd, her plain heels clicking softly against the marble floor.

Daniel turned to grab another glass of wine from a passing waiter when his eyes caught the quiet figure moving toward his circle. His smile vanished instantly. His blood ran cold, replaced by a surge of white-hot, irrational fury.

"Excuse me for a moment," Daniel muttered through gritted teeth, breaking away from Michelle and Arthur Vance.

He marched across the polished floor, his leather shoes striking the stone like small explosions. He caught Elise fifty feet away from his circle, right behind a massive, shadow-draped marble pillar near the emergency exit corridor.

He didn't greet her. He didn't ask how she got in.

Daniel reached out, his fingers locking around Elise’s delicate wrist with brutal, bruising force, dragging her violently into the alcove behind the pillar.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" Daniel hissed, his face twisted in a terrifying mask of rage. His grip tightened until her knuckles went pale. "I told you to stay at home! Are you trying to ruin my life?!"

"Daniel, you're hurting me," Elise whispered, her voice trembling as sharp pain shot up her arm. "Please, let go of my wrist."

"You embarrassing, brainless bitch!" he snarled, lowering his voice into a vicious whisper as his eyes darted nervously toward the ballroom to ensure no one was watching. "Look at you! You look like a maid who wandered in from the kitchen! Michelle is standing right over there with the CFO! How am I supposed to introduce a plain, penniless nobody like you as my wife?!"
