Chapter 7 - The Gathering of FoolsBy 8:30 AM the following morning, the forty-fourth floor of Metroline Dynamics headquarters was buzzing with triumphant energy.

The executive boardroom was a masterpiece of corporate luxury—glass walls overlooking Central Park, a thirty-foot mahogany table surrounded by leather executive chairs, and silver trays laden with fresh pastries and coffee service.

Daniel Hawkins walked through the glass doors wearing a brand-new navy suit, his hair slicked back to perfection, holding a cup of espresso like a king surveying his realm.

Beside him walked Arthur Vance, looking smug and relaxed, while Michelle Vance sat near the head of the table, dressed in an ivory business suit, tapping her acrylic nails against her phone screen with an air of absolute ownership.

"Morning, Daniel!" shouted Thomas Burke, a senior board member, raising his mug. "Ready to officially join the big leagues?"

"Born ready, Thomas," Daniel laughed smoothly, sliding into the leather chair directly to the right of the head seat—the seat reserved exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer.

"Has there been any word from the parent company?" Arthur Vance asked, leaning over toward his assistant. "Is EV Lauron attending via conference call?"

The assistant shook her head. "No word, sir. But corporate headquarters confirmed that an executive representative from Lauron Enterprises will be presiding over the confirmation vote personally."

Daniel scoffed softly, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. "EV Lauron is probably eighty years old and sitting on a beach in Monaco. He doesn't care about the details as long as our division keeps pumping out forty percent profit margins."

Michelle giggled, throwing Daniel a flirting, suggestive glance across the table. "Just wait until dad introduces you to the regional board members tonight, Daniel. We're celebrating at the rooftop lounge."

"I can't wait," Daniel smiled, entirely forgetting the woman he had left bleeding on a stone floor ten hours ago. In his mind, Elise was probably at home crying, nursing her bruises, too terrified and weak to ever challenge him again. He had already resolved to call his divorce lawyer during his lunch break to draft the separation papers.

At 8:58 AM, the double frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two heavy-set men in sharp black suits stepped inside, taking positions on either side of the entrance. Following them was Julian Sterling, holding a thick leather briefcase, and Marcus Vance, carrying a encrypted laptop.

Arthur Vance stood up, smoothing his jacket, a welcoming smile plastered across his face. "Ah, Mr. Sterling! Chief Counsel for Lauron Enterprises! We are honored to have you here today for Captain Hawkins' confirmation!"

Julian Sterling didn't smile. He didn't offer a handshake. He looked at Arthur Vance as if he were looking at a piece of dirt stuck to his shoe.

"Sit down, Arthur," Julian said, his voice reverberating through the silent room like a thunderclap.

The smile on Arthur’s face faltered. Daniel’s brow furrowed in sudden annoyance.

"Excuse me?" Arthur stammered. "Mr. Sterling, this is a celebration board meeting for—"

"The Chief Executive Officer and sole owner of Lauron Enterprises, EV Lauron, has entered the building," Julian announced loudly, interrupting him without mercy. "All board members will remain seated."

A collective murmur of shock and electric anticipation swept through the room. EV Lauron in person?! The legendary, invisible tycoon who owned the entire conglomerate had actually come to Metroline Dynamics?!

Daniel’s heart hammered against his ribs in excitement. This is it, he thought wildly to himself. If I impress EV Lauron today, I won't just be Senior VP—I could be running the entire East Coast division by next year!

He sat up straight, fluffed his tie, and fixed his best, most professional smile onto his face, looking eagerly toward the glass doors.

The doors swung wide open.

A woman walked in.

She wore a bespoke, tailored dark-emerald suit that fit her frame with regal perfection. Her soft brown hair was styled in sleek, flawless waves over her shoulders. On her left lapel pinned a solid gold brooch bearing the crest of Lauron Enterprises—an ancestral seal worth more than the entire building.

Her right wrist was wrapped in a neat, white medical compression bandage.

Her face was dead, icy, and devoid of a single drop of human warmth.

Daniel’s smile froze.

The color drained from his face so fast he looked like he had been struck by a physical stroke. His eyes widened into circles of absolute, paralyzing horror. The coffee cup in his hand began to shake violently, sloshing dark liquid over his knuckles.

"E... Elise?" Daniel gasped, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whimper that sounded completely alien in the silent room. "What... what the hell are you doing here?! How did you get past security?!"

Elise didn't answer him. She didn't even look at him.

She walked slowly, deliberately to the head of the thirty-foot mahogany table—the seat of absolute authority.

Vivien Clark stepped forward, pulling out the massive leather executive chair. Elise sat down slowly, resting her bandaged right wrist against the polished wood, and placed her hands flat on the table.

She looked around the room, her dark, terrifying gaze passing over the paralyzed board members, over a stunned Michelle Vance, over a pale Arthur Vance, and finally resting on her trembling husband.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Elise said softly, her voice smooth, crystalline, and carrying the absolute weight of a billion-dollar empire. "I am EV Lauron. And this board meeting is officially in session."
