Chapter 11 - The Final Shadow

Emily took the envelope. The wax was unbroken, bearing the imprint of a swooping falcon—the Vance family crest.
"Why would she hide from you?" Emily asked, her voice dropping into a tense whisper.
Julian Vance looked at the brick building behind us, then back at Emily. The warmth in his eyes was overshadowed by a grim, terrifying gravity.
"Because forty years ago, Evelyn discovered that the Vance family wealth was built on something far darker than real estate or corporate trusts," Julian said, his voice barely louder than the rustle of the leaves above us. "She took a secret with her. A secret that cost my brother his life, and a secret that she swore would only be revealed when the child with her eyes reached adulthood."
Emily looked down at the letter in her hands. Her name was written across the front in Grandmother Evelyn’s unmistakable, spidery handwriting: *To Emily, when the wolves return.*
"What wolves?" I asked, my voice trembling, stepping closer to Julian. "What are you talking about? The trial is over. The Bradfords are ruined. There is nothing left here!"
Julian looked past us, down the quiet street where the grand opening banners fluttered in the breeze. Two other black SUVs had just turned the corner, parking quietly along the opposite curb, their engines idling, their windows completely blacked out.
"Denise was small, petty greed, Sarah," Julian murmured, his jaw tightening as he gripped his cane. "Denise thought she was stealing a modest inheritance. She had no idea that the safety deposit box key didn't just open a bank vault in this town. It opened the coordinates to what Evelyn took from Boston."
The passenger door of the lead SUV opened. A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped onto the asphalt, his eyes locked onto the letter in Emily’s hand.

Emily’s fingers tightened against the thick cream parchment. The wax seal began to crack under the pressure of her thumb.
"Emily," Julian whispered urgently, taking a half-step back toward his car. "Do not open that letter out here. And whatever you do... do not let them see what is written on the second page."
