Chapter 6 - Retribution

Within forty-eight hours, the Bradford family name was completely dismantled in the county papers.

The local paper ran the headline: *PROBATE FRAUD UNVEILED AT LOCAL CHARITY BANQUET.* The town’s social circle, which had once treated Denise as royalty and mocked Sarah as an outcast waitress, turned on them with ferocious speed. Banks froze the accounts of Denise's husband’s firm. An emergency court injunction was issued by Judge Callahan’s former colleagues, freezing all transactions related to Evelyn Bradford’s real estate assets.

I sat with Emily in our small, sunlit apartment across town. The kitchen table was covered in high school textbooks and legal briefs. She was studying for her final exams while the world outside burned the people who had tried to break her.

The doorbell rang.

I walked to the door, peering through the peephole. Standing in the dingy hallway, wearing a rumpled coat and holding a battered leather briefcase, was Richard.

I opened the door, keeping the security chain engaged.

"Sarah," he said, his voice cracked with exhaustion. "Please. Just five minutes."

"There is nothing to say, Richard," I replied calmly.

"Denise is facing criminal charges," he choked out, pressing his forehead against the crack of the door. "They executed a search warrant on her house yesterday. They found the original medical records in her safe. Sarah, she could go to prison for ten years. Robert is filing for bankruptcy. The house... they’re putting a lien on my house too, because I co-signed the loans!"

"Then you should talk to a defense attorney," I said. "Not the wife you abandoned."

"I was weak!" he cried out, not caring if the neighbors heard him. "You know how Denise was! She controlled Mother, she controlled me! I thought if I just went along with it, we would all survive! I didn't know she stole the entire trust!"

"You didn't care," a voice came from behind me.

Emily stepped forward. She gently pushed the door open as I unhooked the chain. She stood in the doorway, looking down at the man who had abandoned her childhood.

"You knew Aunt Denise handed me an empty box on my tenth birthday," Emily said, her tone dead level. "You knew she called me trash. And you chose her money over my dignity. You thought we were weak because we had nothing. But a person who has lost everything has nothing left to fear."
