Chapter 8 - The Raid on ParadiseWhile the criminal case moved toward trial, the federal task force executed a secondary series of coordinated asset seizures targeting properties and hidden assets owned by Charles and Mark.

I accompanied Agent Vance as part of a civilian advisory team authorized to identify personal items and illicit stashes hidden across properties tied to the family.

On a crisp Saturday morning, federal marshals descended upon a secluded hunting cabin in the Adirondacks that Charles had purchased under a dummy corporation using kickback money.

Inside the cabin, the true scale of their corruption was laid bare.

Hidden behind a false wall in the master bedroom was a massive metal safe containing over four hundred thousand dollars in banded cash, alongside three unregistered firearms with filed-off serial numbers—weapons ballistic tests would later link to unsolved armed robberies across the tri-county area.

Stacked neatly beside the cash were confiscated luxury watches, bearer bonds, and a leather-bound logbook containing the names of local politicians, judges, and businessmen who had paid Charles for “municipal protection” over the years.

As federal agents loaded the contraband into heavy plastic evidence crates, I walked over to the stone fireplace where a framed plaque hung on the wall.

It was an award presented to Charles by the local police benevolent association, inscribed with the words: “Dedicated to Honor, Integrity, and the Unbroken Shield.”

I reached out, lifted the plaque off the hook, and dropped it face-down onto the rough wooden floorboards, letting my boot heel crush the glass into glittering shards.

We didn't need their honor anymore. We had the truth.
