Chapter 10 - The Beauty in ScarsOne year later.

The spring sun shone brightly over the coastal waters of Charleston, reflecting gold off the gentle waves.

I stood on the outdoor terrace of a seaside medical clinic, holding a warm cup of coffee, breathing in the fresh salt air. Inside the clinic, my father was sitting in the waiting room, reading a magazine, waiting to drive me home.

Over the past twelve months, my life had completely transformed.

My mother, unable to pay the massive legal fees and civil judgment against her house, was forced to declare personal bankruptcy and move into a small, one-bedroom rental apartment in another town. She tried sending me letters from time to time, but I returned every single one unopened. Some toxic ties are better left cut forever.

With the financial settlement from the civil lawsuit against the venue, I fully funded a non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting victims of severe burn trauma and domestic chemical violence, providing them with free legal aid and medical resurfacing treatments.

I reached up, running my fingers along my jawline.

After three sessions of advanced laser therapy, the deep pink scars had softened into faint, smooth silvery lines. They were still there, visible if you looked closely—but they no longer represented pain or victimhood.

They represented survival.

My father walked out onto the terrace, holding two warm pastries wrapped in napkins, a gentle, peaceful smile on his face.

"Ready to go home, Claire?" Dad asked softly.

I looked out at the vast blue ocean, then turned to my father, wrapping my arm around his.

"Yes, Dad," I smiled, taking a deep, clean breath of the sweet ocean air. "I'm ready."
