Chapter 9 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for less than four hours.

When the courtroom bell chimed signaling that a verdict had been reached, the air inside the room became suffocatingly tense.
Lauren sat at the defense table, clutching a crumpled tissue, her entire body trembling uncontrollably. My mother sat behind her, whispering frantic prayers under her breath.
My father and I sat hand-in-hand in the front row.
Judge Thomas presiding over the court adjusted his glasses and looked down at the jury foreman. "Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"
"We have, Your Honor," the foreman, a stern middle-aged man, stood up.
"On Count One: Attempted Aggravated Mayhem with a Deadly Substance... how do you find the defendant?"
"Guilty," the foreman announced clearly.
A loud, blood-curdling shriek erupted from my mother in the gallery. "NO! MY BABY! NO!"
The judge slammed his gavel. "Order in the court!"
"On Count Two: First-Degree Battery with a Toxic Substance... how do you find the defendant?"
"Guilty."
Lauren collapsed forward onto the defense table, bursting into hysterical, desperate sobs as her attorney placed a heavy hand on her shoulder.
Judge Thomas looked down at Lauren with absolute, uncompromising severity.
"Samantha Lauren Sterling," Judge Thomas spoke, his voice booming through the silent room. "Your actions were not merely criminal; they displayed a terrifying, sociopathic disregard for human life and the safety of your own blood. You took a milestone family celebration and turned it into a nightmare of jealousy and violence."
The judge delivered the final sentence without a single shred of hesitation:
"For Count One, you are hereby sentenced to twelve years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections. For Count Two, you are sentenced to five years, to run concurrently. You will serve a mandatory minimum of eight years before becoming eligible for parole."
Metal handcuffs clicked sharply around Lauren's wrists as two uniformed bailiffs pulled her up from her chair.
She turned her head as she was being led toward the side exit door, her tear-streaked face locking onto mine. "Claire! Please! Tell them to stop! Claire! I'm your sister!"
I looked at her calmly, feeling no malice, no joy, and no lingering fear.

"Goodbye, Lauren," I whispered.
The door clicked shut behind her, ending her reign of terror forever.
