Chapter 7 - The Trap Is SetOn Friday afternoon, Elijah returned home early, glowing with excitement about the pregnancy announcement. He sat at the dining table, reviewing wedding documents with Julian.

“Pregnant?” Elijah murmured softly to himself, looking at a small ultrasound printout Vanessa had left on his desk.

In my car parked two miles away, I picked up my encrypted satellite phone and called Elijah’s direct line.

“Grandma?” Elijah answered, his voice filled with joy. “I know it's late there! I couldn't wait to talk to you—you're going to become a great-grandmother!”

I closed my eyes, keeping my tone gentle. “Is that true, child?”

“Yes! Vanessa is six weeks pregnant! We are getting married tonight, just the two of us. I know you won't be able to fly in until tomorrow evening, and it’s a shame you won't be there for the vows...”

“Do you love her, Elijah?” I asked softly.

“With all my heart,” he answered without hesitation.

“Then listen to me,” I said firmly. “Whatever happens tonight, remember who raised you.”

Elijah paused. “How could I ever forget, Grandma? I love you.”

“And I love you more,” I whispered before ending the call.

I turned to Marcus, who was reviewing legal warrants on his tablet. “I hired a private detective the moment she started denying the original marriage contract three weeks ago,” I told Maya, who was sitting beside me. “Vanessa isn't even her real name. And Julian is not her brother. They have been legally married in secret since 2019.”

Maya gasped. “Married? Both of them?”

“They are professional romance scammers,” Marcus explained, pulling up mugshots on his laptop. “Two widowers in Florida, one in Houston—totaling $4 million stolen. A warrant has already been issued for her arrest in Miami. A wealthy man in Houston was declared incompetent two weeks after his wedding, and he died in a facility eight months later. The medical report was signed by the exact same doctor Vanessa hired here.”

“And they were going to do the exact same thing to Elijah,” I said, my blood running cold.

Maya reached for my hand. “Let me call Mr. Elijah right now! Tell him before he signs anything!”

“No,” I replied firmly. “If he hears this from me over the phone, she will start crying. He will start protecting her. And by morning, they will disappear along with the family jewels. He has to see her face with his own eyes.”

Marcus checked his watch. “Mrs. Vance, if he signs the power of attorney before you arrive in the foyer, it will take months of legal battles to untangle.”

“Then I won't be late,” I declared. “I want my grandson to see her true face when she sees mine. Call the detective. And tell the groundskeeper to open the side garage at seven.”

Maya looked at me eagerly. “Can I come with you?”

I smiled warmly, patting her cheek. “Honey, I’m counting on it. You will return to that house wearing the finest dress in this city.”
