Chapter 9 - The ReckoningVanessa clutched her stomach, attempting a desperate tearful defense. “Elijah, please! I am carrying your child! Would you abandon your own child for a maid? Is that even possible?!”

Maya stepped forward, tapping the tablet in her hands. “You told him you were 6 weeks pregnant, Vanessa.”

“I am!” Vanessa shrieked.

Maya held up a high-resolution ultrasound scan on the screen. “At 6 weeks, an embryo is the size of a single grain of rice. The scan you sent Mr. Elijah shows a fetus at 20 weeks with a developed spine and 10 fingers. You aren't even showing a belly. This picture was downloaded from an online medical forum three days ago.”

Elijah looked at the screen, then at Vanessa’s flat waist. The deception shattered his heart instantly. “Vanessa... why?”

I took the tablet from Maya and played a crystal-clear audio recording through the ballroom speakers.

“When she is declared incapacitated, her grandson will become her guardian, and I will be his wife... She will love the gardens down in Savannah... at the facility.”

Elijah took a step back, horror washing over his face. “You were going to lock my grandmother away in a nursing home?”

Marcus walked into the ballroom accompanied by four uniformed police officers. “And the man she calls her brother, Julian, has been her legal husband since 2019.”

Julian immediately put his hands up, backing away from Elijah. “Hey! Don't look at me! It was all her idea!”

“You were doing this scam long before you met me, Julian!” Vanessa screamed back, her facade completely collapsing into ugly chaos.

Vanessa turned toward the side exit, attempting to bolt, but Officer Torres stepped into her path.

“Are you going somewhere, Miss Vanessa?” Officer Torres asked coldly. “There’s an active felony warrant out for your arrest in Miami.”

An officer immediately handcuffed Julian, while another grabbed Vanessa’s phone.

“We'll take the phone as evidence,” the officer said. “We heard you like filming old women.”

Vanessa dropped to her knees, sobbing hysterical tears as the officers restrained her. “Please, Mrs. Vance! Please! I'm leaving tonight! You will never see me again!”

I walked slowly over to her, reaching down to unclasp the three-hundred-carat ruby necklace from her neck.

“Only two women have ever worn this,” I whispered down to her. “Me and my grandson's mother. It was never going to touch your neck.”

Vanessa looked up at me, tears ruining her makeup. “You told me... you let me make you kneel...”

“Nobody ever paid me to kneel, honey,” I said, my voice echoing with immense pride. “I built this entire house on my knees. Now get up. You'll need your legs to walk to that police car.”
