Chapter 10 - Sunday DinnerThe sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting long, amber shadows across the back lawn as the smell of roasting rosemary, garlic, and grilled steak drifted through the open French doors of the dining room.

Sunday dinner had become an unwritten law in the Vale household over the past six months—a tradition of normalcy, warmth, and togetherness that nothing in the world could interrupt.

Around the long mahogany dining table sat my three daughters, their laughter bouncing off the crystal water glasses and silver cutlery. Ava was telling a dramatic, animated story about her college prep track team tryouts, while Harper giggled uncontrollably, and Emma sat proudly beside Claire, carefully using her fork to spear a roasted potato.

I stood at the head of the table, holding a glass of vintage red wine, looking around at the faces of the people I loved most in the world.

My heart felt steady. The syndicate was officially dissolved, its toxic assets liquidated into legitimate, transparent philanthropic foundations run by trusted boards. The enemies who had tried to tear my family apart were locked away behind federal prison walls, forgotten by the world they had tried to manipulate.

And here, in the heart of Ashford House, life was whole again.

I raised my glass slightly, catching the attention of the table. The chatter slowly died down as all four pairs of eyes—from my teenage daughters to my youngest, and finally to the woman sitting at my right hand—turned to look at me.

“To new beginnings,” I said, my voice steady, warm, and filled with a deep, unshakable peace. “To the people who save us when we least expect it. And to family—past, present, and always.”

Claire raised her glass to mine, her dark eyes shining with quiet emotion in the warm candlelight. A soft, knowing smile touched her lips.

“To family,” she echoed softly.

Clink.

The crystal glasses chimed together in the quiet evening air, a clear, ringing note that felt like the final, perfect chord of a symphony written in survival, resilience, and unconditional love.

As Emma reached across the table to grab a piece of bread with a joyful giggle, and Claire leaned in close with a soft whisper to help her, I knew that whatever tomorrow brought, we were ready for it.

The war was over. The house was safe.

And we were finally home.
