Chapter 7 - Unraveling the GhostThe C4 detonator sat on the desk beside Marcus’s unconscious body, its red LED light blinking harmlessly in green standby mode.

I let out a ragged, shaking breath, my knees suddenly feeling weak as the sheer magnitude of what had almost happened crashed over me. If Claire hadn’t slipped through the side balcony doors while Marcus was busy gloating, my daughters would have been buried beneath tons of reinforced concrete.

I dropped my rifle onto the leather sofa, walked over to Marcus, and dragged his heavy, limp body across the floor, dumping him unceremoniously into the corner near the bookshelf.

“Who sent you really, Claire?” I asked, turning around to face her. The adrenaline was finally ebbing, leaving behind a cold, hard clarity. “People with your training, your tactical awareness, and your complete lack of hesitation don't just apply for maid positions on Craigslist. Who are you working for? The federal government? A rival syndicate? Or are you a ghost from my own past?”

Claire walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling, manicured lawns of Ashford House, where police sirens were now beginning to wail faintly in the distance. The streetlights caught the harsh, twisting network of scars along her forearms and neck.

“I don't work for syndicates, Mr. Vale,” she said softly, her voice carrying a heavy, sorrowful weight that I hadn't heard before. “And I certainly don't work for the government anymore.”

She turned around, leaning back against the glass pane, her dark eyes locking onto mine with an intense, haunting clarity.

“Three years ago, there was a car bomb in downtown Chicago,” she began quietly.

My chest seized. The room spun.

“How do you know about that?” I whispered, my voice cracking. “The federal investigation was sealed. Only the top officials knew—”

“And the security detail assigned to protect the target’s family,” Claire interrupted, her voice steady as a rock. “I was lead tactical logistics for the private security detail assigned to Elena Vale—your wife.”

The world stopped spinning. Every sound in the mansion—the faint hum of the servers, the distant sirens, the ticking of the vintage clock—vanished into absolute nothingness.

“You...” I choked out, taking a step forward. “You were there?”

“I was driving the lead escort vehicle three cars back when the remote detonator went off,” Claire said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears that she stubbornly refused to let fall. “I pulled your wife’s body from the burning wreckage. I carried your youngest daughter, Emma, out of the smoke before the fuel tank exploded. And I spent the next six months in a military burn unit recovering from the thermal blast that left every inch of my arms looking like this.”

She slowly unbuttoned the cuffs of her sleeves, rolling them all the way up to her shoulders, exposing the full, horrific extent of the burn scars crisscrossing her skin.

“When the federal investigation was quietly buried because half the city’s politicians were tied into the syndicate’s payroll, I resigned, stripped my badge, and disappeared,” Claire continued, her voice hardening into steel. “I spent three years tracking down every single lowlife, middle-man, and corporate rat who had a hand in that bomb. And six weeks ago, when I found out Marcus was planning a second wave to wipe out the rest of your family so he could take over the entire operation... I found an agency profile, dyed my hair, changed my name, and got hired as your maid.”

I stood frozen in the middle of the room, my mind struggling to process the staggering weight of her words. She wasn’t an assassin sent to kill me. She wasn't a spy planted by a rival syndicate.

She was my guardian angel—a ghost from the worst day of my life, who had spent three years in the shadows just to make sure my children survived the war that took their mother.

“Why?” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Why protect me after everything? I was the target. If I hadn’t built this empire, Elena would still be alive.”

Claire pushed off the windowpane and walked slowly toward me, stopping just a foot away. In the harsh light of the office, I could see the fierce, unbroken strength in her eyes—the exact same strength that had kept my daughters alive in the kitchen an hour ago.

“Because Elena was my friend, Mr. Vale,” Claire said softly. “And because little girls need their father. Even a flawed, dangerous, hard-headed father like you.”
